    Hello ladies!!

    Hi there,

I'm going out with a guy who has recently joined the RNR. There's a ball coming up and I was hoping to get some advice on dress codes to such parties. It's on HMS President - will it be a full length ball gown affair or cocktail dress? It is a "serious" occasion or just a booze-up?! Don't want to embarrass him (or myself) on our first Navy do!

    Thanks girls,
    Smurfette x

    Ow do Smurfette an welcome.
Your OH should be given clear instructions on dress, some functions are ballgown and mess dress, others are cocktail dress and dinner suits. It depends on the function really. If he is unsure get him to ask for you. Enjoy.

Thanks! Probably best to check with the boy then (although getting clothing advice from men isn't the easiest of missions!).

If its described as a ball then you can get away with almost any smart dress.

Try and avoid anything with vast puffy bits though - leave that to the CO/bosses wife and her collection from the 1980s!

Personally I'm a big fan of those silk 'Chinese' style dresses .....

Didn't have you down as a silk dress wearer BCO, still it takes all sorts!!

Ask other half to clarify for you Smurfy what the dress code is, then you can't go wrong. What ever the dress, have fun and enjoy!!

    Re: Hello ladies!!

By the means of a 'ball', you mean 'Mess undress', if so then its formal and gowns will need to be applied. If your OH is a senior rate or above, then I am affraid trouser suits are out. Knee length or longer will need to be taken into account, however, being linked to the RN, your all be p*shed as a fart within the first 2hrs

My OH is totally hopeless when it comes to dress code advice but thanks to all of you for the head's up on what's appropriate for different occasions.

Off to my first Wardroom drinks/dinner tonight - another "what to wear" dilema this morning but don't think he'll be disappointed with my choice! I can't wait to see him all dressed up in his uniform - men in uniform can't fail to look gorgeous and s*xy!

    Re: Hello ladies!!

A good rule of thumb sometimes if you are not sure of the dresscode is to go for a long dress.

I have a chinese style dress i have worn to a few when i didn't quite know the score ( at different events and with different units. Can't have the fashion feux pas of being seen in the same outfit now, could i!! )

Also, some are fussy about whether your arms are bare or not. Bring a nice wrap/shawl/pashmina-type-thing with you. If you don't need it, it can always be removed

    Sorted

    Hi Smurfette

For what its worth, I went to the Summer Ball at the In & Out on Friday night, and wore knee-length. The majority of ladies there were in cocktail dresses (it being FAR TOO HOT) for longer ones.

    Enjoy!!
