French Gal working in Luxembourg, UK squaddie based in Italy

And yes, despite the very unlikely combination, we managed to a)meet, b)fall in love, c)get married, e) spend enough time together to get a little one on the way...

Am a bit new to Army life, TBH most of the time it feels like a different planet to me. I don't currently spend much time in a squaddie environment, having my own job and house and social life in France, but of course I'm exposed to it when I fly to Italy for the weekend or holidays to see hubby.

I can understand the pain and sadness of separation, I have it all the time as we don't live together. OFC we meet up regularly, one of us is always on a plane to see the other, but it's not an easy life. And when hubby gets sent to war zones (Afghanistan being the most recent example), my stress levels go through the roof. Do we ever get used to it?

Just thought I'd pop in and say hi, the site looks cool and friendly.

    Hi There,

    Welcome to RP!

I thought I had a bad time with before I married hubby who was only 500 miles away! I know what you mean about the flying to see each other thats hard saying goodbye everytime you or he has to get one that plane.

It's still a different planet even though I was brought up in an army environment and worked in it for 8 years, I still cant get used to all the stuff he talks about!

When is your baby due? RP has a lot of new mums (i have 4 month old) and pregnant ladies just now!

    Take care,

    Susie

Euch, Ryanair.........I can sympathise agian. I used to bounce into Bornemouth airport with them a couple of times a month. Was bad enough but when I became pregnant it was even worse!

Baby = No instructions....... although I did get a book from the Health Visitor called 0 - Five. Only read it once as had no time to read my own name on the front of an envelope!

My hubby had the chance of a job in Italy a couple of years ago but he took a 20 month course in Dorset instead. I wonder if he can get the chance again.........

Bonsoir Valérie! I'm in France and bf usually in UK, so we do the long distance thing too. Just saw him off on Eurostar at lunchtime.

Welcome to RP and good luck with the pregnancy.

    A très bientôt,

Valérie bienvenu! You seem to have settled in already and will no doubt be able to share your wisdom and experiences as time goes on.

Slight diversion to the thread, but which industry are you in and have you considered dealing with an agency who would be able to place you at short notice?

Re: French Gal working in Luxembourg, UK squaddie based in Italy

    Salut Lysie,

The one thing I can tell you about long distance relationships is that they require a lot of work, especially on a Friday night when a) you're tired of a week's work b) the weather is stormy and you just know the flight is going to be a nightmare c) you have yet to get your rear end to the airport and that's 2 hours on the coach and you really could think of a more enjoyable way to spend these 2 hours.....(think warm bath with a glass of Bolly).

...but when you get there, all of it is forgotten. There is that holiday feeling to your weekends that you just don't get any more when you're living together. You know that you're going to do silly hours all week in Siberian weather (that's Luxembourg to you) but come Sunday you'll hit the beach in sunny Italy (and I don't care if it's too cold to go in the water, just walking on the beach hand in hand does it for me). And when you fly back on Monday morning, you've had a 5 AM start to catch that flight but you've got that silly smile on your face and nothing can take it away.

So I say go for it, it's only for a limited period of time anyway until you find a better solution. If you find work locally all the better, in my case I'm far too specialised so that was never going to happen in small town Italy, but if I look back it's all worth it. The key element though is that both of you have to be willing to take up the gauntlet, otherwise it clearly will not work. Another solution to consider is work on remote? I now do that one week per month, armed with my laptop, mobile phone and Blackberry I can work anywhere. And my colleagues in Maastricht, Heidelberg, Vienna and Milan don't give a monkey's whether I am sat in Luxembourg, Latina or Timbuktu as long as we can continue to work together. It may not be possible in every industry but for me (financial services) it's a life saver.

Hope you find something that works for you Lysie, and if I can be of any help just drop me a line!
