    popping head above parapet

hi, i am a newbie. another one! sticking my head above the parapet to see who's out there and to say hi.

i have been looking to join something like this for ages and finally have managed to navigate my way here.

my name is sarah, i am don't know if i will be wellcomed here or seen as being able to belong. my links to forces are this. born and brought up in forces as dad was in for about 33 yrs. my brother was in also but sadly i lost bob in iraq in jan 2005 when his hercules ac was shot down. all ten on board lost their lives and i lost my hero. so, with my dad out of raf and bob now out i am stretching it to say i too am part of forces family. i hope i can still be classed as part of it, but that's for others to decide not me.
i wholeheartedly support our armed forces and continue to fight their corner and campaign for them and on their behalf. i was very shocked and angered to learn that the ac that bob flew was without a safety system on board that both usa and oz have had for years, our boys/girls requested and may have saved the lives of those on board his plane. i spent 2006 campaigning to ensure this was changed. this was supported by ex pilots and we diid it very high profile but we were ultimately successful. so, it is fair to say i totally am in awe and total support of our troops and their needs.

god, this turned into a long post. i just wanted to say hi, and a bit about me.
it would be great to hear from you.
    thanks

Welcome chappie - and you are most definitely welcome here!

I am very sorry to read about the death of your brother - the story, including the BoI and the campaign were followed closely on our parent site ARRSE.

As I said, welcome to RP and I hope you enjoy it!

thanks for the welcome. i like the idea about blogging the campaign and in fact am in process of helping organise another one about the travesty of the broken covenant and lack of equipment and proposed defence cuts. it would be helpful, but i am not computer literate and can't even create an avatar or anything else. please don't worry i am not mad political hairy lady with a penchant for mung beans and chanting. no offence to those who are! think i had better shut up now!
in fact next few weeks are going to be hard as finally after three years we are having our inquest starting at the end of march. losing someone so special has destroyed my family and so i have been left to try and deal with the after math on my own while supporting others thrrough it, so i will no doubt get a bit blubby as sometimes i feel so alone. civvie street continues in it's own blinkered way and i feel isolated.
thanks for the words of encouragement though.

Noooooooooooow you've gone and done it! All of our members, who are in fact hairy ladies with a penchant for mung beans and chanting (amongst other predilections) are going to revolt or be revolting or something like that!

I'm only hairy, because my foot's in a cast and I'm planning on winning the hairy leg competition for Rendevous (2 more weeks and I'll have full dreadlocks on the shins...) I hate beans, granola and if I try to sing, my dogs start howling so, once the comp is over and the cast comes off... it's Nair time.

    Welcome Chappie.

You're not alone in how you feel. I lost my husband in the Falklands conflict in 1982. There isn't a day goes by that I don't wish for a time machine to take us all back to the moment where we answered the door to be told he was being recalled. If I could go back to that moment, I would have ignored the door or at least pushed him down the stairs so he broke his leg and didn't have to go.

I've also sat through BOIs, learned when to ignore the papers or the latest and greatest take on the Falklands by a kid that wasn't even born when it happened. I got trotted out countless number of times as the "widow" and attended more dog and pony shows than I care to remember.

In all of that I managed to learn how to be strong and get on with my life. I leaned on my friends, my family and the kindness of strangers to get through it all.

Nothing will ever take away the ache I feel for him and I won't try to tell you things will get better, all I can say is that one day, you'll write to a stranger and say, "I know how you feel". Your grief in turn will help someone someday, get through theirs. You'll have survived if you can do that.

Be kind to yourself in the processes you'll go through.

    Hi chappie

I think that a Blog would be an excellent idea. You don't need to be computer literate, just hammer away and let the spell checker do everything else!

And check your PMs (they're on the front page on the right hand side - no, other right!)

Tact is for people who aren't witty enough to be sarcastic.
