Loobylu's Guide to Abbreviations for Newbies.

    Dear All

As a newbie to all things army and RP site please would you by kind enough to let me and others know what all the abbreviations are that you know, then when my OH comes home on Friday I can fascinate him with all my new found lingo.
Any army abbreviations would be really welcome!

I have one I'd like to know.... what is SSAFA?

Opinions vary but as Bootiful says, it's from the days of the Raj and generally refers to a soldiers kit & caboodle.

One thought is here in the ARRSEpedia, where it suggests they are your beret & belt.

Another that I've heard is that it's still about kit, but "monkeys" are the bits that hang off you such as your rifle, and "parrots" are the bits that perch on your shoulders, like a large pack and webbing.

There's lots of other interesting stuff from the days of the Raj and the Army's time in North Africa that you'll still hear, such as dhobi, bint, wallah, bundook (or bunduk), ulu and suchlike.

Depending which unit your OH is in, there are often bits of slang that are quite specific to them. Sometimes they spread through the Army, such as "tab" and "yomp", and sometimes they are confined to a particular mob, such as "durch" in the RGJ/Rifles and "Ally" in the Paras.

    Have fun!

Ooh, Loobylu, that was a good idea for a threat! Being far from being a rear-veteran myself, I never quiet came round to "learn" all the short forms.
But then I always nod knowingly when I hear one and then later ask hubby "what does this and that mean" *lol*
so will have a browse through the linked sites.

Monkeys and Parrots are your purse, keys, fags, lighter, mobile phone, dog lead, pooh bags and dog.

I learnt one the other day. BFOT.

It was actually on a warning order.

Now that you've brought it up I was looking through an exercise kit list OH brought home other day and found it hilarious that he had to take HOUSEWIFE. I then made a big joke out of fitting me in his burgen to a look of immense ! Still haven't found out what it is lol, but I do know KFS is Knife Fork Spoon... YAY!!!
