I know that some of the guys bought cheap mobile phones for themselves and their OHs so that they could throw them away as soon as they came back so that the numbers weren't traceable once they were back here. Just a thought and it might help.......

Keeping busy helps - I spent the last tour constantly waiting for phone calls, and it meant I either always missed them or had to cut something short - which made me feel like screaming. This time round I decided that I would hear from him when I hear from him, so any voice on the phone is a bonus. It does also mean that I am not always sitting around waiting. Booze definitely helped first time round - white wine preferably Ozzy.... but this time it is cold turkey and I find RP and mugs of tea are great - the only problem is it tends to keep me from much needed beauty sleep!!! Hang in there - the time really does start to whizz past.

It needs to be a decent vodka, the top priced smirnoff is the absolute minimum I can stomach neat, cheap stuff just knocks me sick without a mixer.

Worst I ever had was a night on several bottles of red wine, then back to a (so called) friends house where she gave me a half pint of baileys.... !!

Hmmmm gullet full of red wine, throw half a pint of curdled cream and whisky (?) on it.... guaranteed that when you throw up half an hour later, its bright pink!!

Totally put me off baileys! Luckily not the red wine though.

Talking of which... I work for a wine company, with a 30% discount, so drinks should be on me (for a little while anyway!!!)

Mine is due off to Afgan in December for 6 months - he's been told that mmobiles are definitely a no no. I'm gutted re the seperation but he did give some good advice........... no news is good news. If he can't send email/letter or phone just think communication down and not OMG something has happened. He's reassured me if anything had happened I'd be contacted within 24 hours so now when he goes and I don't get email I wont worry as much

and.... as someone said earlier..............the news is something I won't be watching or listening to,

    Keep smilling

I think it depends where they are in Afghan, I know when my OH was there last year he was ok to use his mobile, but that was in the North, and as we know they do change the rules, but he had been told originally that he couldnt use it but once they were there apparently it was ok.

Re: the mobiles in Afghan - I think they're clamping down on them at the moment. There was a story in the newspapers yesterday about soldiers having their mobile phonecalls tapped. The Taliban (that's who they thought it was, but who knows) would then call back the family saying 'We've just killed your son/husband'. Obviously this was crap, but imagine how terrifying it would be to get that phone call.

Anyway, as a result of that, I think they're clamping down on mobiles out there, but I tend to take anything I read in the papers with a pinch of salt, so don't quote me on that one!

Yeah I read that one, but they had the same situation last year in Iraq according to the media, maybe it happened once or twice but who knows. If theyre saying its safer to avoid using mobiles then Im not going to disagree with them.

Thank you everyone for the advice about mobiles and that. He's been gone a week now and I'm already starting to feel better. The thought of him going is worse than the reality, I'm sort of pretending he's not there! I'm just getting on with it because at least now it's started and there is nothing I can do.

Every cloud has a silver lining though, I have lost weight with the stress!
