    An introduction...

After 7 years with the OH, i guess I am entitled to call myself a "significant other!"
Found this site, through the Horse and Hound Forums - (Thanks Fizz06!) and logged on as the OH is off for a month tomorrow, and its the first long one we have done.
He is RAF aircrew, we are both mid to late 20's.
Anyone any tips on how to get through the next 4 weeks? I know I will be fine, its just the first few days that'll be a bit awkward until I get used to being on my own again.
    Thanks for listening

    Hiya JB

I have been with my fella for just over a year ... hes RAF ATC hes off to Iraq in July for 4 months... Dunno what I am gonna be like lol altho we dont live together so I guess I am used to not having him around all the time, but we chat on the phone every night so it will be kinda weird not doing that ... I have decided that I am gonna concentrate on losing weight (for our wedding) and doing a course so it will keep my mind busy so I wont worry to much .... she says lol
As everyone keeps telling me ... the time hes away will go pretty quickly .. try and enjoy a bit of you time

RAF have a different way of doin things than the Army/Navy P_P.... they're certainly not used to 6 month tours

Doesn't make it any less difficult the first time I s'pose.

    Hi Jellybaby,
It's always hard to be apart from the one you love...and it will always hurt...but you do learn to live with it...so trust us all you will be ok...Plus now we have "RearParty" we can all help!
I didn't realise how nice it was to get a letter in the post until my man went away for the 1st time, it's something that you can read over and over again...and I've been told by my other half it's nice to have something that they can read when they get a bit low to remind them of home. So get those pens out.
And....while he's away think of all the things you don't have time to do when he's home...go for a massage, get a girly film out +Couple of mates and have a laugh/cry, go and visit a museum that you've always said you don't have the time to go to or why not go shopping and buy some nice underwear which you can show him when he gets home.
Time will fly and soon he'll be back and you will have survived!
Go girl...it will be ok...and shout out if you get low!
    Take Care,
    Red x

Of course we have been apart. We don't live togetehr as he is absed in the north of Scotland and I have my career down southas I can't work in Scotland as the legal system is different. So we have a "weekend" relationship, which works brilliantly.
We have been together for 7 years, but we are Childhood sweethearts. He has been training since he finished Cranwell so has never elft the UK for more than 2 weeks, so this one is a bit "worse"
I know the army and Navy girls must find it so much harder as their men go away for months at a time, which must be so hard.
When I posted yesterday I was having a "wobble" but I'm back on the straight and narrow again and throwing myself into work.
Thanks for reading eveybody, and for your suggestions, I will definately write to him!
    Thanks a million.

The best way to cope with any time apart no matter how long or how short (and beleive me sometimes the shorter times apart can be harder than the long stints......) is to not beat yourself up when you have a down day and just spend your time crying, and to make sure you don't put your life on hold for the time they're away!!

When hubby went to the desert he left on the Tuesday night and I went to work the next day........ I had to pull myself out of my pit where I'd wallowed all night and paint that smile onto my face! It wasn't easy but it was far easier than on occasions where he'd gone away on a weekend/Friday leaving me time to mope around the house!

Contact is always good.... especially the letters, we've got boxes under our bed of cards/letters/postcards that we've sent to each other over the years, from 5 page essays to simple notes!!

I'm sure you'll be just fine, and at the end of the 4 weeks just think of how proud you'll both be to have made it!
