New, Unsure and Far Far Away

    Hello everyone,
My situation is a little odd, as I met my OH while studying in London for a semester. He is in the Army Air Corps, while I am stuck in the middle of the United States finishing up my last term at uni! He came to visit me here in America for two weeks, but I have been a mess since he left, as I have no clue when I'll get to see him again. I've read some posts and I know that having a time to look forward to seeing your man again helps get through the rough parts, but I feel as though I only have ifs and maybes. I've never dated anyone in the military before. I am finished with uni in May, and would move to Britain to be with him, but it is so hard trusting in this. It's partly my own fault, as I had my heart broken earlier this year and am a little wary. But, I'm willing to do anything to try and make it work with my OH. I'd really appreciate any advice and look forward to reading some good posts on this site to help me get through it all! Thanks!

Maybe dont move to the UK straight away why dont you spend the summer here getting to know each other before you decide on such a big move, I dated someone in the AAC and I hardly every saw him just the nature of the job he was in, dont know if the situation is the same for your chap but you have to take it into consideration, its a big move to make especially if who your moving for isnt going to be around alot to support you.

    Good luck!

Yes, that was what I thought too, that a summer there would allow us to be able to see each other without planes, tranes and automobiles involved. He's up for reposting in August, and may go to Iraq then, so we'll just have to see what happens.

Holiday, is there a way to come to the UK not soley for him? Maybe look into the BUNAC scheme (if that's not what you've done already), or if whatever you're studying at uni would get you into a job with an easy work permit, maybe look into that? That way, you'd be here on your own merit, able to make your own circle of friends and can make the decision to stay/leave regardless of what happens with him.

yes, I was planning on doing the BRUNAC program, so that I would be able to work. As I'd only be there for a summer, I wouldn't really be moving permanantly for him. I think it would allow us time to figure out if that's what we would want later on, once he knows where he will be stationed. He's looked into requesting a transfer to a base in Texas, but those rarely come through.

Believe me, I'm worried about making such a big move as well, but it really wouldn't be solely for him. I loved my time in London and would love to live there again. I'm also in a transition stage and I have been trying to decide if I want to go to post graduate school or not and haven't found one that I feel would be the best place for me yet. I can't go for another year yet as I need to take the GRE, the test required for graduate school entrance and applications are due in December. I had planned to take it last November, but studied in England instead, a decision I do not regret at all. I thought that this summer, I might look into attending grad school in England. I was very interested in the Univeristy of Bath and the University of London. Another possibility would be to get into contact with some companies who may be willing to grant me a work visa. I'll have to do some more research on the subject.

Re: New, Unsure and Far Far Away

I've spoken to one of my OH's mates who is a lecturer at a Uni in Devon, and he advised me to look into post graduate school. I was worried that it may be difficult for an international student to get in, but after looking into my marks, he said I should have no problem. I am a little worried that the English educational system may be more than I can handle though. lol. I'm a literature major with a focus on British literature and I'm interested in going into Publishing.

    Hi Holiday,

I honestly wouldn't worry about the English educational system few of us handle it either Also international students do get a fair amount of help I think, settling in and everything - well they bring them in a week earlier here to help them to adjust to the uni, the campus and the town etc.

With regard to the move I think TankiesYank is the best option although I do know another lady that has moved over here and recently taken her patriation (?) test, if you want a second opinion.

Hope you enjoy the site and welcome
