    Another Newbie

Hello all, I have been invited over from rumration and very glad to be here. I am sure you will all be alot more sympathetic to a suffering mum! My 16 year old son is going through navy basic training and its not going too well at the moment. He is struggling big time with the kit and has now failed 2 musters. One more try tomorrow and then backclassed. Trouble is he is now down and homesick and stopped phoning. Said he would pvr if he fails tomorrow. Ahhhhhhhhh - what do you do?

Wait and see. I had the same with mine just over a year ago and he's still in. Must remember though, the life doesn't suit everyone.
    Anyway, welcom.

Thanks all for the welcome. Wait and see is good advice I know - but its still b hard isn't it! All he has wanted to do for the last 3 years is join the navy and he invested so much effort to get this far. I think half my problem is that if this doesn't work out there is no plan b!

    Re: Another Newbie

Hi Josephine, heard from him friday after failing his 2nd muster with a sock problem! He has received his second official warning and was in tears from the bollocking. Very down, didn't believe he could do it and talking about pvr if he fails last retake tomorrow. If he fails tomorrow he will be back classed and then one more go. If he fails that he will be discharged. He went off to Dartmoor on Saturday and we were hoping for a call last night but nothing. Trying to decide if he doesn't want to be convinced to stay and see it out or was just busy trying to get everything cleaned up. People say no news is good news but with Adam i tend to think the opposite. Does anyone fail 3 kit musters in a row?

    Re: Another Newbie

I remember a few people failing kit musters for the smallest thing. It comes with a lack of attention to detail; the PO/CPO will be going through everything with a fine tooth comb. He has to be honest with himself, if he is failing on something as small as socks, maybe he should either by a pair from the NAAFI or pop down stores/ ask a junior rating to go to stores for him and pick up a few pairs of issued socks.

You get 3 free pairs of socks a month from stores issued.

I have mentioned this before but maybe asking for help isn't such a big problem. Believe me people are friendly enough to help, continuing from this, his deputy class leader/ class leader should be doing everything to help him, it is what they are there for!

If they are not, he may want to approach his PO as the chain of command doesn't seem to be helping, if that is a problem.

Hi georgielass and thanks for the offer. He is going in as a stores accountant if he makes through basic! It wasn't his first choice but his eyesight aint that good so choices were limited. Thanks all for the advice - unfortunately if he doesn't ring my chances of passing it on are zilch!

    Re: Another Newbie

Well what a day!! No 1 son finally phoned at lunch time today having failed again. Gutted but ok and not quitting. He had been told he would be back classed 2 weeks which is fine. Means he will go back after Christmas for one week and then pass out (hopefully). The CO phoned me and explained everything and said that in her opinion he could make it - so big relief all round. THEN about 1/2 hour later he phones in tears saying he's just been told that he's only going back one week. Which means that having just done Dartmoor this weekend, he's got to do it again next weekend. Think he's still so nackered from it that this was the last straw. Hung up on me in the end saying he's pvr ing this afternoon - that he couldn't do anything and just wants to come home. Basically IMO tiredness talking - we all know what kids can be like when they are tired! So I rang the CO told her the tale of woe and she said she would go talk to him - we await further developments!!! What a nightmare.

    Re: Another Newbie

Dartmoor is knackering, first hand ecperience and wouldn’t do that one again! But having been that he has done it once before, if he had done good, they may not make him do the whole thing again. I remember one guy had been back classed into our entry by one week and ended up on Dartmoor again but they used him as a helping hand.

I’d really stress how inportant it is for him to to whinge or drip about doing it, it would only be thrown back in his face, basic training isn’t the nicest place but there is a reason to why people are treated that way and a good lesson!

Let us know how he gets on!

    Re: Another Newbie

Thanks Josephine - I do take your point about the whingeing. TBH my main priority at the moment is to keep him there and trying hard. PVR is in no ones interest but am beginning to seriously doubt that he's going to make it. The CO said that even if he failed again with the kit they might not necessarily discharge him but could back class again. I'm impressed that they are prepared to give him that many chances, just not sure he's got the staying power to keep picking himself up each time.
