    HELP!!! Moving to Faslane!

    Hi,

I am moving to Faslane once we're married and we have the house on MQ's, does anyone know much about the place? When I googled it, all that come up was an image of a man who was being pulled out of a tree by a police officer and on travel review websites, there was 'no matches found'!

Any help would be highly appreciated!

    Thanks!!! xx

    Thank you very much!

It's a bit erm... remote! Reading that makes me feel better! When I googled it, there wasn't a fat lot and it made me panic a tad bit!

    hi kayleigh

it is a bit remote isnt it but at least you know now where you'll be based. Do you drive as it looks like it would be better if you do?

Hope everything works out ok for you all the way up there in lovely scotland. We lived up there many years ago and loved it but that was in Edinburgh and not so far up but Glasgow's good as thats where my dad came from.

    xx

    Hi Angeleyes!

Yes - I am really looking forward to it! I have only ever lived in Birmingham and around that area. So I don't know anything but concrete and even more concrete! I have actually never been to Scotland in my life! I don't drive yet, no. I am due to leave work soon (I am in my notice period as we speak) and I am planning on doing as many driving lessons as I can before I leave to go and move in with the H2B after the wedding. I am hoping that as I won't be working that I will pick up on it fairly quickly and at least have my theory and loads of lessons under my belt, but hoping for my license. I don't know how long it will take the for the RM's to get us a house though from when my OH applies for MQ's. So all depends on that really!

Is there much to do in regards to jobs/colleges do you know?

yeh i dont drive yet either but we aint going as far as you guys but you should love it up there or at least once you get yaself something to do while hes at work you should. Not sure about local stuff but there's everything in Glasgow and O2 even have a call centre there, i know that cos thats who i work for at mo until i leave so at least thats something you could do if you wanted to. You could try googling Glasgow and see what comes up or go onto their local government site or try checking out the info on the hive as there should be all local info etc on there?

I've visited a couple of times.

1 - It is remote, when it was set up it had to be.

2 -It's remote, outside of the patch there's not a huge amount to do.

3- It's remote, and Scottish so expect some interesting weather systems, and midges when it's not too wet for them.

Honestly, learn to drive, and you'll survive it, learn to love the location and you'll adore it. Personally I'd love to move back to Scotland, and as far as I'm concerned living an hour or more from the city is the best place to be.
Heaven wont have me, hell is scared I'll take over. Time for the pub!

On the move this weekend. Not sure yet where I'm going or when I'll get there.....hope theres enough vodka in the car.

In my experience of living in remote places with no car it was a bit of a mare trying to do anything more interesting than a bit of light shopping, I have vivid memories of trying to carry a small flatpack bookcase home on the bus.....I suspect the driver does too!

Well what my plans are for the long term is to get a job for the first year, then I want to go to college and persue a career in Physiotherapy. I suppose if Glasgow is within easy reach then I could commute everyday. At the moment I commute in and out of Birmingham everyday so that's commuting everyday is not an issue. I am pretty sure there are plenty of jobs in Glasgow, I work in one of top Solicitor firms in the UK at the moment, so any law firms will do if I have too, I HATE offices, they just don't agree with me! Having said that though, if I have to work in an office, then I'll do it!

I agree with the whole car thing. That's the next big thing that I am planning on doing. I am getting myself on the road ASAP. Plus if I am going to be on my own for quite a lot of the time the last thing I want is to be stuck with no means of transport! Just awaiting my provisonal licence in the post and then I am straight onto the lessons!

    Re: HELP!!! Moving to Faslane!

If you're in quarters in Helensburgh itself you'll be fine. The base itself is about 20 mins away but when I lived there years ago (not Navy but knew lots of people who were) the people I knew were all quartered in Helensburgh. Helensburgh's not the most happening of places but Glasgow's about 40 mins on the train. I did laugh a bit at the 'they've even got a call centre' comment above - Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, has three universities, lots of colleges and a population of more than a million. I'm so jealous of you getting to live up there!
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok. They know me here.

    Re: HELP!!! Moving to Faslane!

I'm not quite sure where we'll be living yet. All I know is that he is being based in Faslane, that obviously doesn't mean we will be living there of course! If we get Helensburgh, then I wouldn't mind commuting, as I said above. I thought that about Glasgow, I thought that it would be faily big (in all honesty, I never realised it was THAT big though!) so I am sure, push come to shove I can always get a job there if needs be!

I'm glad people are saying that they're jealous, as I have never been to Scotland in my life, it's starting to fill me with confidence! I don't know much about the place other than it's cold hehe!

    Re: HELP!!! Moving to Faslane!

making me want to move more and more now after reading your posts. If you get there before I do you'll have to give me some tips.
Iam the same, I'm studying holistic therapy hoping to get out of office work but if thats what I have to do in the mean time thats fine by me. i would be happy to commute into Glasgow, I commute into Manchester everyday from Derbyshire so thats no big deal.

Keep in touch, I would be interested to see how you get on x

    Re: HELP!!! Moving to Faslane!

I was a silly mare and I never wanted to go to college, so I never got my A Levels, so I need them before I can do the course to get me onto Physiotherapy. So I decided last year that I was going to do the three A Levels from home and then a month later I was engaged! Then all of a sudden, I have had a wedding, passing out day, moving away, leaving my job, attempting to get some driving done so the A Levels have gone out of the window .

I am hoping to pick them up again when I move away, it all depends on money though and how far it is to college's and whatnot. I really don't want to work in an office ever again!

Where abouts in Derbyshire are you? I commute from Tamworth to Birmingham everyday at the moment.

Defo, I will let you know once I know more! x

    Re: HELP!!! Moving to Faslane!

I live in Glossop so its actually closer to Sheffield, it takes about 40 mins on the train to Manchester so roughly like Helensburgh to Glasgow.
My hubby has been there about 18 months, ive only been there a couple of times and always around winter when its a bit bleak. Having said that I only really spent time on the base and havent really had a good luck round. I love Glasgow and when up that way we always find time for bit of shopping and a nice meal or two.
We thought I would be happier at home than at Helensburgh and I was for a while but he has been away so long and I really miss him so Scotland isnt looking so bad. I have been married almost 2 years and I must have seen him for about a year, if that.
Wow you do have a lot on your plate. If you need any advice on being a Navy wife just ask xxx

    Re: HELP!!! Moving to Faslane!

Oh right, quite far from me then! Derby isn't too far from Tamworth, I thought you might not have lived too far from me!

Ahh, okay. The furthest North I have ever been is Blackpool! Shocking isn't it! I don't so much travelling in this country, I prefer to go abroad (somewhere hot!!). So given that, I have no idea what Scotland is like! I can guess, but I may be way off the mark!

I would like to explore Glasgow, Edinburgh and all the other places up that way, but we shall see!

I do, I have had several other things to do aswell inbetween, so I have been a busy bee!

My OH is the Royal Marines, do they get based with the Navy then up that way? xx
