    Toast

In two weekends time, I'm going to be best man at a wedding.

Speech is more or less done. I need/want a closing toast a little mire original than 'to cyril and bertha'.

She is very much into old authors and poets, anyone know of good quotes, sayings etc from the old writing brigade alluding to happy marriage and life together?

    Cheers in advance.

I'm no good at these either, but have found these:

Love seeketh not itself to please, nor for itself hath any care, but for another gives its ease, and builds a Heaven in Hell's despair.
    by William Blake

Love is the only gold. by Lord Alfred Tennyson

Love is the flower of life, and blossoms unexpectedly and without law, and must be plucked where it is found, and enjoyed for the brief hour of its duration. by David Herbert Lawrence

Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness. by Oliver Wendell Holmes

Love: A temporary insanity curable by marriage. by Ambrose Bierce

I don't know if they will be any good!

My dad simply stood up and said:

Thanks for coming. The bar's free and it's open!

I write the same thing in all wedding guest books (I hope friends don't compare them!) it usually goes along the lines of "hope you marriage is as beautiful as <insert brides name> is today.
All the cool kids have a signature but I have nothing witty or profound to say.

In my opinion, no-one else has said it quite like Kahlil Gibran:

'You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.'

    - On Marriage, from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

    Good luck!
