I'd love to be able to knit - I just never had the patience and could only ever make the stitches go so tight, they were waterproof. And had to be cut off the needles. I think my mother despaired - my Dad could knit better than I could!

I will bring my training needles to the meet- knitting 101!Originally Posted by Evil_Adjutant
Yep knitting is having a resu...resurg.. it's cool and trendy again! I had a craft shop, and the knitting wool was one of the most popular items. There's quite a few 'bitch&stitch' clubs who meet in coffee shops/pubs etc.
I'm a woman on a knitting mission, everyone is expecting babies at the mo, and I've got 3 shawls to do !!!

Apparently he realised we'd been rumbled when my nana found my green plastic knitting needles shoved up the bum of the knitted dog thing which sat on the back of her sofa.
I tried to learn to knit again a few years ago and funnily enough the knitting needles tended to be used as a stabbing implement to annoy my sister/dog/boyfriend while the wool I think I spilled wine on and ended up binning.ops:
Heaven wont have me, hell is scared I'll take over. Time for the pub!
On the move this weekend. Not sure yet where I'm going or when I'll get there.....hope theres enough vodka in the car.
I can remember knitting squares for a donkey sanctuary at Brownies circa 1976. We all had to knit one square foot of any spare wool at home and they we spent an entire Brownie session sewing them all together.
The only thing was, a couple of months later one girl had to get a lift home from the Brown Owl and we all saw the rug lining the back seat of her Mini Clubman
Thus my knitting career finished ............

Probably best to just knit the scarf on two sraights back and forth instead!
Knitting has definately stopped being an old people thing! You can get some amazing patterns now! And i'm only 25 and I love knitting!
My mum suggested I take up knitting but I thought I was 'too young'! I had the preconception that it was only grandmothers that knit!!
After reading this thread I might give it a bash now..I love my winter scarfs and what could be better than the achievement of making my own!
Do it doodle!! I am loving it! I taught myself the basics last year and I really enjoy it. I get a lot of stick from people at work for doing it on my lunch break but oh well! I'm the one with the funky scarf when its cold!!![]()
All the cool kids have a signature but I have nothing witty or profound to say.
Anyone of you knitters want to teach me how to knit??
I'd love to be able to do it, but my mum won't teach me (in fact I'm still waiting for the jumper she started to knit me when I was 11, I'm 33 now!!!) and I have no grandmothers to teach me.
Any tips on how to get started? xOriginally Posted by dizzy.chick
I taught myself on chopsticks- i wouldnt reccomend that though! pretty difficult lol Bamboo needles are the best for beginners (so I have been told). Get larger needles as its less fiddly and what you knit will "grow" faster and motivate you![]()
online videos are a pretty good way if you plan to teach yourself. As with anything its about practice makes perfect.
Where abouts are you located Doodle?

Anyone ever done anything with felting wool? Saw loads of the stuff when I was over in Germnay made into funky handbags and slippers and stuff but my Deutch was nowhere near good enough to read the books on it.
Just seen some in a local craft shop and fancy having a go, but have no idea were to start.
I can knit, but don't tell the other MODs ill get banned from the cave!
Sluice xx
Sluice,
I saw some bits about felting wool last night- I am going to town later for some supplies and I think there is a guide in one of the knitting mags this week- I will have a look.
Trial and error thats my way!

I remember my nan teaching me to knit, crochet, sew cross stitch and embroider when I was little. I can still sew but have 'lost' all the other skills, as I grew up and had neither time nor patience to carrythem on.
However on my last lengthy visit to the UK I was sat with my nan watching an ITV drama and feeling all nostalgic, I asked her to re teach me to knit. I too am only 33 so nowhere near ancient. Anyway it's wonderfully relaxing. Had I not been a pedantic perfectionist I would have a purple glittery scarf by now. Every time I drop a stitch I unravel and start again, maybe I should drink wine OR knit.
Hmmmmm, anyway, until I learn to pick up stitches I fear I'll have the worlds smallest scarf!
