    Diamond Jubilee

2012 will be Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. 60 years on the throne. Fantastic.

We were nattering in the office about the Golden Jubilee where, subject to certain conditions, Armed Forces personnel got a gong. But what about for Her Majesty's 60th? Another gong? Surely not.

Which got me thinking. To commemorate 60 years, how about something for the families of personnel instead? A small badge and letter of appreciation, perhaps. The conditions would have to be set early and JPA would have to be involved no doubt (for instance, NOK would be the named person to receive the 'gift').

Something a little different for a very special occasion. What do you think? (And should we be dropping a line to the Palace to suggest it?)

Oh yes please, that'd be my first gong (and undoubtedly my last!)...logistically a nightmare though!

Yep, a logistal mare but it could be done. The only other downside would be that the MOD would pick up the bill, and I can't see them doing that in this fiscal climate, somehow.

Great PR for them and the Government, though....

    Re: Diamond Jubilee

Just to put the opposing view forward - why should NOK be recognised for a choice someone else made to join the military?

It might be 'nice' but I don't see it bringing with it a whole load of praise - you'll have the media jumping on every little error, the costing of it will be jumped on as an example of money not going to 'our boys and girls on the front line', and a few months later that nice little trinket/letter/whatever will be gathering dust in a corner if not dumped because to most people it will be utterly meaningless.
Heaven wont have me, hell is scared I'll take over. Time for the pub!

On the move this weekend. Not sure yet where I'm going or when I'll get there.....hope theres enough vodka in the car.

No probs with the opposing view, Scuba. You're right, anything seen as an expense will get jumped on by the media.

The Palace will be commemorating the event one way or another - let's hope it isn't swallowed up into Olympic hysteria.

A special Armed Forces garden party would be interesting too, but I fear the same old characters and seniors would end up going. Some recognition for everyone would be much more appropriate.

    Re: Diamond Jubilee

And we deserve a gong why?????? It was our own personal choice to marry a soldier (I actually married a bus driver but one year married to me and Mr.Soots was down the recruiting office........... I was a tad disappointed I was going for 6 months!!!!) and take all the crap that comes along with it. I don't think we deserve medals we are, at the end of the day a bunch of women who love our serving soldier and support them in all they do and are proud to do so.

I would rather the money for these proposed trinkets be put to good use, for the guys and girls out in the sandy places, or perhaps be put towards wheelchairs for the injured up at Sellyoak (was anyone here aware there is a huge shortage of working in good order wheelchairs??? but because of red tape and certain rulings if I were to supply them with 20 wheelchairs they couldn't guarantee that they would be used solely for the soldiers that need them they would be used by one and all).

Sorry for the rant but it grips my shit, there is a huge shortage of everything for our troops and you think a gong and a big party in a posh garden (been there done that!!!) is a good idea?????

I'd take issue with that. Everyone can apply to go to the Garden Parties and who gets the lucky ticket is a complete lottery.

I agree with Soots though. I don't need a badge to wear to point out to all and sundry that I'm an 'Army Wife'. I knew what I was signing up for (and a bit more into the bargain) and I'm happy to do it. As long as Mr B and the kids appreciate me then that's all that matters to be honest.

Calm down, dears. It was merely a suggestion, I wasn't expecting rants :?

No rant from this direction - I don't do rants, just an alternative viewpoint.

This is wrong - it's only 2 years since the silver jubilee....isn't it? It can't be more than that because my mother still has the teatowel!!

    Re: Diamond Jubilee

whilst it would be nice to recognise those supporting the guys on the front line, I have to agree that it would just be a complete waste of money.
I agree with Soots, there are far more important things going on that need sorting out first. My uncle has just moved into his adapted quarter a month later than he was supposed to because it had been adapted wrong. Instead of putting in a wet room as they were supposed to (he lost both his legs, muscle in his arms and half his hands as well as other injuries) they put a bath in instead. He would be unable to get himself in and out of the bath. They put the wrong door handles on so he wouldn't be able to open doors by himself - I could rant about this kind of stuff all day!

    Re: Diamond Jubilee

I don't like the idea of anything that is going to cost money, as in 2012 we also have the Olympics and possibly a Royal Wedding. I love the Royal Family, but at the moment, with all the cuts going on I just think a small gesture would be nicer. To me it kind of flies in the face of saving money to spend money, if that makes any sense?

Perhaps a two or three days extra leave for all members of the Armed Forces? Its easy to organise, free of charge and people could take it when it suits them and do exactly what they want with it. It could even be called the Queens Jubilee Leave or something.

It would be murder getting the colours right - so that they would match the Ron Hills and high-heel slingbacks.
If I make a statement, but a women does not hear it, am I still wrong?

Auld_Yin, you're SO off the mark these days  The latest "uniform" for playing out in is now a White Stuff jumper. A specific style with "White Stuff" on the collar.

Such a shame - I liked their clothes, too...but no longer

I love fat face stuff! I have to say I was shocked when it was commented on the fact that my tag was hanging out the back of my top - you really don't want people knowing you shop in that cheap store!! It was New Look and I'm not bothered where I buy my clothes as long as I like them!

Oh god, don't tell me that I'm doing something wrong by wearing my fat face tops.... I've only just slimmed down enough to be able to fit in to their clothes, please don't take them from me now!!!

Now, now, this is in danger of being turfed into retail therapy!!

(A White Stuff has just opened in Farnham, apparently... can't beat the outlet shop at Gunwharf in Portsmouth!)
