Do you need to be able to drive to work, or are there alternatives (train etc?)

Essentially I have to drive as the local train station, well from Reading it's 25 mins by car and by train it's 30 mins and 1 change + 10/15 min walk at the other end (not that I mind walking).

Area wise, I'm not precious on, if it's middlish it then comes down to could we live there and what's the house like...
