    Question Chicksands?

It now looks likely that we are moving to Chicksands. Can anyone tell me anything about the camp, quarters, local supermarkets, hospital, surrounding area etc?

Any info appreciated as it's all very well reading "The Manual" but real experiences are always preferable IMO

    Thanks in advance

Sincere apologies if these are the things you have seen already:

    Chicksands Service Community Official Guide

Ministry of Defence | Defence For... | The Service Community | HIVE Information Service | Central England | Chicksands HIVE

    Chicksands - PatchPedia

I'm hoping that someone local to Chicksands will be along to help shortly.

PS I think that the HIVE has hard copies of the little book which they can send out.

    Hi

The houses on Chicksands have been done up recently so they are really nice compared to others, there are 3 little estates on the camp so depends where you are but you should be placed in a newish one (lovely cream carpets all the way through lol). There is a Morrisons in Shefford which is in easy walking distance from camp or there is a Tescos in Bedford about 10 minute drive and the same with the hospital.

We have been based here since oct 2009 but I couldnt tell you much about groups and clubs on camp as I was working full time until recently but there is a little cafe where the hive etc is. I dont really know anything about schools as my little one is only just 4 weeks but there is a school bus that comes on to camp for them.

And if you dont like onions hold you nose when you come to the front gate there is a veg packing factory there and OMG the smell is horrid especially on sunny days.

If you need anything else just ask and I will try and find out for you

It's been a few years since I was in that neck of the woods but I recall a lovely curry house in Shefford.

And yes, the smell of onions from the factory by the gate can be incredibly potent on warm days!

I am not so sure about the quarters at Chicks, have visited a few friends who live on camp, but know the area quite well, Shefford is a lovely little village, very close, full of squaddies etc on a sat night in the Cornerstone along with a few inbred locals!- sorry! you will understand after a couple of nights there! Hitchin is very close, 20 mins or so, which is lovely, nice market town, lots of cute little boutiques, and the usual restaurants, coffee shops, high street shops, bars pubs etc

The villages surrounding are lovely too, it is a nice area, I recently moved to this area and I am very happy..... you will enjoy it, and yes, the onion smell is terrible plus the mobile phone network can be a nightmare, I know that Vodafone isn't very happy there!

    Enjoy!
