We've got a place near Aldershot we go to at weekends, I suppose London is do-able, but you'll bspend a lot of time on trains!

Moodybitch's the person to ask, she did it for over 40 years before she retired. But be careful, she's a game old bird, she'll try to tell you she's a young thing, but just take it with a pinch of salt, she's a granny and a little grumpy!

    Lol @ Beebs.

    Welcome.

I would need to know what you did for a living to recommend an employment agency. If you drive there are other areas more local you could work in. Reading is nearer and they have a lot of employers there.

My husband and I live in Germany and rent our home out, not in NI, but I have a fully managed package which guarantees the monthly income regardless of whether there is a tenant in there or not. I pay slightly more for the benefit BUT at least I know that my mortgage is going to be paid every month.

Anyway, good luck with the move and if I can help in anyway let me know.

    Re: Posting to Aldershot

Have not been to Aldershot in many a year. But location wise it is not bad (I used to live in Theale outside Reading).

You've gots lots to choose from workwise depending on whether you drive or relying on the bus or train. Reading, Guildford, Woking are all options if you drive, commuting by train into waterloo is achieveable. If you want to go into the city then add another 20 mins for Waterloo and City line and actually walking to the office. Commuting adds at least two hours onto your working day and its not for everyone.

Just in case you are looking for admin and secretarial and general office jobs. Have a look on secsinthecity.com - all the agencies are on there. Temping may well be the best option to get your foot in the door.

However, temp rates and salaries have dropped sharply in the last 18 months. I worked part-time on a project 2 years ago for 30 per hour. In the current market rates are just 12-15 per hour, its not viable for me as my fares are 25 per day return.

Cheeky bint! I haven't even been alive for 40 fecking years!

The shot isn't the best of places Purdy, but as mentioned it's locality means you are only 30 mins from Reading and 40 mins from central London.

I worked in London during all my time there and local jobs aren't the best paid so you may want to consider jobs in Woking, Guildford, London or Reading if you are career minded.

The quarters aren't too bad, but avoid any on Waterloo Park cos they are very old and very sh1t!

Shop-wise, Aldershot is dire but places like Guildford etc as mentioned aren't far at all with good train services so don't panic. As for nightlife, again, it's crap unless you like naff boozers, but there are plenty of them and you can always go further afield as last returning trains from Guildford, London etc are about midnight.

If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me.

    Re: Posting to Aldershot

Thanks for the hints - lve been in contracts/operational/project managment and think l will have to commute into London though spending an hour on a train doesnt bother me - beats sitting in traffic for 30-40mins as l have been used too anyway!

OH has kinda got me warned off that Aldershot isnt the greatest of towns but for me to get work its much better than where we originally thought he was going outside Salisbury! And if lm gonna get some kinda job in London then shopping wont be a worry!! Im sure there is a Tesco cos they are everywhere!

Im going to get a letting agency take of the admin of my house l think it easier my parents are too old and live too far away to want the hassle!

But thanks for the help guys lm sure l will have lots of other questions soon!

Good luck with everything and keep us updated.

If I hear of any agencies in that field looking for someone in aldershot/guildford way I will send you a PM.

Sammi - lived in Theale between 1991 and 1994, when it was still tiny. One high street, with five pubs, a chinese, indian, thai, pizza parlour and a kebab van in 200 yards. Good times! X

    Re: Posting to Aldershot

I have just been offered a job in aldershot but I have had to turn it down as its a bit of a drive for me. The town itself isnt fantastic but its calmed down a lot recently and last time I was there it felt a bit of a ghost town. Guildford and Woking are nearby though and the shopping is ok Plus there are some nice places for walking/awesome views around the area too. Now if only I could convince my OH to move that close to home!

    Re: Posting to Aldershot

I concur with all of the above. OH and I have settled not far away and there are some lovely villages around there (i.e. lovely village pubs!).

The trains up to London aren't too bad - every half an hour and they run until midnight. I commuted up that line for about a year and only a handful of times were the trains up the creak.

Guildford is by far the best for shopping, as is Farnham for a market town. Aldershot itself is pretty manky I'm afraid so any excuse to get out of the place.

The coast isn't that far away, either, less than an hour's drive to Portsmouth / Chichester.

Best of luck with the move, Purdy!

    Re: Posting to Aldershot

Thanks you are all making me feel slightly more at ease about the move!

Im not usually a shy person but lve only ever lived in Northern Ireland and whilst not on top of my family they are only 1.5 hours away if l need them and my friends are all here - so the move across the water is pretty big step.

And lm concerned that l want to ensure l can make a network and life for myself outside of my OH dont want to be dependent on him for everything and if he goes on tour again it wont be like last time where my friends and sisters were just around the corner. I just dont want to live in his pocket! And as l dont have or intend having kids (being a step mommy suits me fine!) l dont tend to have as much in common as other army spouses (l know lm being a bit generalistic here and pigeon holing folk) so that just is at the back of my head too!

Oh lm sure lm just over analysing things way too much!

Completely understand Purdy...nice to stay sightly "out of it" a little bit.

H_P - Theale hadn't changed much when I was there in 1999 either!

Once you get settled Purdy, I'm sure a small get together could be organised

    Re: Posting to Aldershot

We got offered our MQ today - Cole Avenue in Salmanca Park - OH seems to be quite pleased with it but as for me l know nothing lm still a bit nervous and apprehensive about moving (and excited too mind)

But we are over in mainland this weekend so intend to go to Aldershot and have a nosy!

I guess its extremely bad taste and a tad rude to knock on the door and say "excuse me love mind if l take a look round your house cos we are moving in here in June??!!!!!"

You could always just knock on the door and ask them how they've found the quarter. If I were them I'd invite you in and let you have a scout around. You might even encourage me to open a bottle of something white and wet if it's after 6!

It would be after 3 and it is gonna be a Fri so surely that would excuse the early opening of the aforementioned white/wet??? :P

    Re: Posting to Aldershot

Aldershot is an acquired taste for sure but lively and not too pricey considering where it is located in the south of england. If you have a car there is a fast train to waterloo in 35 minutes from Farnborough, plus Aldershot has regular trains to waterloo in less than an hour.

Michael Page (http://www.michaelpage.com) have an office in Weybridge and have jobs in that area. Reading is not too far away and in Farnborough there are loads of IT companies so there might be some project management jobs. You might not need to even commute into London town - although it is very easy to do.

Lots of lovely countryside nearby - its worth becoming a member of the national trust if you like nice walks. Loads of good national trust sites all around Hampshire and Surrey. Guildford is about 30 minutes away and has good shopping. Plus there is a mahoosive M&S in Camberley not that far away too.

Good luck with the move. We are being posted not a million miles away - surrounded by boxes as I type
