    Hunter Wellies - Any Good?

I am looking into buying some wellies. I am considering Hunter's as I know that they are quite big in the wllington game. I have just been looking online and I have found some that I am considering buying tomorrow but the reviews have been very mixed. Has anyone here ever owned a pair? If so, what did you think? Some are saying that they are splitting within 3 months and others are saying that they love their Hunters and would be lost without them! I have never had to buy wellies before, so I don't really know what else there is out there in wellington world.

They will be for walking the dog over the fields and that is about it. I don't own acres of land and I won't be living in them 24/7 but they will get worn for as long as the dog wants to be out for every day.

I just don't want to waste money on something which will only last 2 minutes. At the same time though, I don't want to shell out a fotune for a pair as I (well the hubby as he will be paying) don't have that money at the moment.

    Cheers all

I love my hunters, they hav served me well for 2 years now, and I get alot of use out of them riding, mucking out, dog walking, etc. They are def the comfiest wellies I hav owned (and being a farmers daughter I've owned a few)!! The only thing I will say is that my mum had a pair that only lasted a few months, however, I put this down to her leaving them outside in the rain/damp/dirty, I always rinsed the worst of the mud off mine and left them standing in the dry. Hope this helps!

Ah yes, this helps loads. I don't intend to leave my wellies outside because I am scared spiders will start living inside (ha how pathetic I know). I intend to scrub them down and keep them indoors somewhere so they will always be looked after.

I can imagine that if I even put them down for a minute and I'd not cleaned them hubby will anyway ha.

I know that they won't last forever, but I would rather pay £60/£70 for a decent pair that will last a few years than pay £20 for a 'cheap' pair that will break within weeks of me getting them and then I have to replace them several times a year which will then, in the long run, cost more than just buying a decent pair to start with!!

I have always worn hunter wellies, they are fab. Like Kaz says though don't leave them to rot in the rain. I always had one of those boot holder things that held them upside down to enable them to dry out properly and cleaned the worst of the mud off. Mine normally last around 3 - 4 years, maybe longer.

Hunter Originals seem to have become a bit hit and miss recently, the rubber is thinner and quality not nearly as good as they used to be but some pairs do last the distance, you just can't be sure that you've bought a good pair. I had a pair that split after only a couple of months so now I wear Hunter Argylls which are slightly thicker and half the price. I also have a pair of Toggi Columbus which were not cheap but are sooo comfortable, waterproof, warm and appear to be bomb proof. The Toggi's should last a good 5 years and that's with heavy use which makes them better value than Hunter Original's which I don't think you can't trust these days.

I agree with GS. OH had 2 pairs in 2 years and mine lasted 1 year. On all 3 the rubber pretty much rotted away even though they were cleaned and dried out after we used them. They used to make them so much better in the olden days!

I now wear a pair that I've had for 4 years that I bought in Costco for £20 and they're fab.

I have a pair of Joules wellies which have been carrying me up hill and down, dale towed by two large dogs, for four years and they are still in good nick, which is more than can be said for their owner!

I've had my good old green dunlops for years and they are very well used. I have the monsoon ones as they are longer than normal. Think they were about £10 from the local agricultural supplies place.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I am going to stick with a pair of Hunters and then see how I get on. I have found a pair on Amazon for cheaper than retail price, so I will get them from there.

    Cheers all!

Hmmmm, maybe I'm not in the Wellie set, but the maths doesn't add up here for something you are going to be standing in shit in, one way or another. You can buy Wellies for a tenner in most garden centers, why on earth would anyone want to spend £60 or £70 on something to stand in the muck in? The Hunters would have to last more than 8 years to be cost effective, and judging by the replies here, that isn't the case at all. Maybe it's a fashion statement or something?

I have managed to get Hunters for £39.99 on Amazon, that was with free postage and packaging. I only got it free because of the colour I ordered else it would have cost me loads (£6 upwards) more. As I don't drive for me to get to an outdoor place from where I live it would have cost me (getting there and back and purchasing some wellies) the best part of £30/£40 anyway if I did get some from the first place I went to, rather than totalling the cost of various trips from place to place to find the pair I wanted in my size or whatnot (if that makes sense).
