    New 'Portal' on the Patchpedia

I'd appreciate it if anyone interested could take a look at the new planned Portal for families' advice which is currently sitting in my user area in draft.

Any comments for anything you want including, or changes - anything at all in fact - please jot them down here. I am aiming to produce a one-stop shop - a 'gateway' to the most useful pages or utilities available. Also, if anyone thinks it's a waste of time - say so.

The red-linked areas will be populated in good time - I just want to make sure this is something that people want before I delete. Or ask an admin to do it!

    Cheers.

Also, is there an up-to-date list of RP admins anywhere I can get the latest info off? I know there are some listed on that page that don't seem to be around much.

Very impressive, although regarding design I would definitely tone down the pink a bit. Also it may be worth getting rid of the right column?

Dedicated formu threads a great idea and it would be if the threads / forums were to follow the same structure as the PatchPedia. This is something I will look at. Therefore a forum for each area, with threads for each location within that area to start with. Maybe sub forums for the major Garrisons. RP is full of discussion topics that could be moved in. I will look at this tomorrow with Evil_Adj.

Planning Your Move etc are the parts of that that I most like. Including a directory of internal PatchPedia SFA area links would also be good at the top somewhere.

That's my thoughts for now but I will look further tomorrow.

Site admins and mods are listed here:

Thanks for the input at of course the flagship Larkhill page.

All copied GCO. Just let me know what you need moving. I will look at the internal structure of that page tonight and start filling in the redlinks.

Yep - the pink is a bit much (just brought across the formatting from the original page) which may be why it didn't get much trade on AP. I'll also re-org the various groupings and come up with some suggestions - one idea that springs to mind is grouping under HICs then on down through Garrisons etc. Just an idea.

Thanks for the links - as I say, this is a work in progress and clearly I will call it something different in due course. Possibly link it in from your existing front page?

Also, having a few dramas with viewing the front page of RP on Firefox 3.6 - renders perfectly in IE8. The picture of the books is missing in FF - not an add-on issue either.

Using FF 3.6 here and all is well. Stupid Mozilla can take it's time updating properly so hope it's not permanent for you (but doesn't that front page look ace with the books on it? Me likes!)

Thanks Cocoa - I'll dig around in Mozilla and see what might be the problem. V annoying - I hate IE!

Edited to add: Ha! It was an add-on: Ad Blocker of all things!

Re: New 'Portal' on the Patchpedia

First off, this is a great idea. After looking through the site, these are merely pickings (I used to do this kind of thing for a living).

Forgive me whilst I have my on-line public relations head on...

It's a bit pink. Purple would be too MOD but another more neutral colour would be better. Funny how we can get so hung up on colour but, I don't know, it looks a little girly for me.

The language is a bit Army. Sorry, I'm an RN wife, but 'Garrison' is very Army and may be a little off-putting for RN and RAF spouses. There's also a protocol on listing AF and tri organisations: Tri-Service first, then RN, then Army, then RAF. You could ignore it, but whatever list priority you decide, it should be consistent.

At the moment, the 'Garrison' list is a bit hap-hazard - how about regions or just A-Z of the major bases? There's certainly been some nattering on here regarding being based at Devonport (Plymouth), Yeovilton and Faslane.

One for your 'Club' listing - the Royal Maritime (or 'Home') Club in Portsmouth. http://www.royalmaritimeclub.co.uk/ One for the RN and their families.

Seems to be running well for me on Firefox, bar the big pink box hanging over the frame template, but that's just minor templating stuff.

Lovely idea, though, glad it's being done!

    Yeah all copied - thanks!

I have played around with the colour palettes (had enough now...) so please tell me what you think? (You can't tell but the colours actually combine purple, red, blue and light blue...good eh?)

I have deliberately gone for something low-key and unobtrusive - and easier on the eye. My intent (tell I've been to Staff College...) is to put all the info into modules using wikitables (blahblahblah) so that it will be much easier for anyone to subsequently edit....he says....

I will tidy up the categorisation of links and so on - I need to get the basics in play first then tidy, neaten and hit the whole thing with the massive 'bullshit' brush downrange.

    Keep the comments coming please.

    ..and another thing.

Can I flag up pages that need deleting in here as well - I am making all my templates in the sandboxes before moving them into a proper template page - I will then need to clear my sandbox stash before it turns into 'Wiki Fiend Pedia'...

No idea who the Wiki admins are (apart from the 2 bureaucrats of course).

    Cheers!

And I'm normally a very non-jump-to-conclusions kind of person but failed on that one.

    Really sorry
