Thread: Join the PatchPedia Project!

ARRSE, RR and RP and many other forums have masses of threads asking about quarters and postings. There's a continual need for up to date info as we're posted from place to place and only limited information available online or on the grapevine. This is despite the fact that in depth knowledge of all the postings already exists.

The solution is the PatchPedia project. In a nutshell, everyone contributes to the online 'guidebook' for your current or recent postings and benefit in turn from the contributions of others.

The PatchPedia

We have started the ball rolling with barebones articles on all the UK base areas (mainly from the Hive information online) and put a structure for the articles in place.

What we need now is for YOU to take it forward. Visit the patchpedia, click 'edit' on the top of any page and start writing everything you know about your posting. Just like Wikipedia everyone can contribute.

I'll write more about how to get involved over the coming days.

So please, get involved in what will be a truly superb resource for forces families everywhere. Any questions? Fire away!

Is there going to be a section for the overseas postings? Or am I being completely dim and we just have to add it to the list?

I'll write up a draft on paper before I start editing the page for where I live...safer that way, or I may end up making little sense!

This has come at just the right time for me, I need info on about 5 different places and been having trouble finding it, so it would be interesting to see if people edit the pages about those areas.

I'm a complete novice where wiki stuff is concerned but I've had a play around with one of your patches. No idea at all how to make the hyperlink thingy work properly though. You have to click on the number wotsit instead of the name. Oh, I don't know. Can you make it work?! (And share the wisdom please!)

I've just sorted that out although its looking pretty sparse at the moment .... remember this is a wiki so if you have a good idea then your don't need to wait for 'permission' to crack on. Wiki's are also incredibly resilient so you don't need to worry about doing something 'wrong' ..... beware they are addictive though!

I'd really recommend having a look at the Tutorial on the ARRSEpedia as a great way to understand the concepts and syntax behind a wiki

It's great to get up this morning and see these posts - thank you for the enthusiasm.

Regarding realism, go for it, but I think we need to aim for 'life here can be difficult because....' rather than ARRSEPedia style ''it's a shithole" I admit that might be tricky with places though - I'd have been hard pressed to say anything more constructive than "avoid it like the plague" about Londonderry if it were still a posting.

I think telling the truth will help - and the main thing is, we NEED articles! Obviously nothing TOO slating but honest, helpful advice is what is required.

Please also remember that the PatchPedia templates CAN be moved around/changed to suit the area. If you think there's a subject missing (i.e. there is Pets which is nice and general, it can cover walking areas for dogs, for example, or recommended kennels - which would be a great help to people moving to a new area - and trusted vets for darling Kitty) then feel free to add the info.

If there is anything glaringly missing - add it and let us know. It's a grow-your-own centre of information, and between the information in Rear Party threads as it is, we should have plenty to be getting in there.

According to the "to do list" starting overseas pages is 8th on the list with the 1st 2 already completed.

Celle is one of the nicest postings I had but I am a bit of a Deutsch-ophile. I was a singly so I can't offer much info about the patch but I will get stuck ino to a general Germany page this evening or tomorrow.

I've added some to this from memory but it will need putting right please, particularly the MQs section as I think I've probably only included OMQs and I'm sure there are more areas
