    Re: Ask MHS!

    Hi,
Wonder if you can help with this one -
It's been confirmed today that we have asbestos in our house. The guy that did the so called survey (5 mins of me pointing out what I thought was asbestos!) told me he would put in a request to have it removed, although he's not promising anything.
I think its all down to cost as its so expensive to remove it.

Anyway, have looked into this further and by law it should be labelled and checked annually for damaged etc. There also should be a asbestos report for the house, although it seems nothing has been done.

What do I do next? Any help/suggestion would be great.

    Re: Ask MHS!

    Hi,

first post here on this site! Well, I'm new to the whole army experience thing itself, but I have a question about MQ.

My OH gets posted in january, I'm going with him, and we are most likely getting married in november time/december time.

Does that leave us time to apply for MQ? And how do we go about doing it?

And is there any chance we can get MQ before we actually get married, as we originally planned to get married in Marchtime.

Any help woukd be great! I am thouroughly confused :?

He needs to go into his UWO and get all the details and fill out the paperwork etc.

There are numerous threads about moving into MQs please clickity click on linky. Unless you are married you won't get one, hence the name Married Quarter.

ahem, I believe that the term 'married quater' has been replaced with 'Service Families Accommodation' or 'SFA' for short.

Indeed Pip you are right I stand corrected.

You can move into an MQ up to two weeks before you are married if you provide proof of the forthcoming marriage.

    Re: Ask MHS!

I wonder if anyone can help me with a small problem. We have a garage in a block of garages about a mile from the house, so handy to have been allocated one there when all the houses in our street with attached garages were empty for a year, however I digress. It was nice to find a dishwasher in the garage though (I even managed to get it to work)

I attemted to report that the door doesn't lock anymore, the wooden frame is rotting faster than a labour MPs morals. I have reported this to the MHS 'help' line and now several months later I still can't use the garage as its insecure. Who is responsible for fixing this and how to I get in touch with them?

It only took 2 years to get the oven fixed so I'm not holding my breath on this on. I've fixed most of the problems with the house as DIY is quicker than using MHS (in my experience)

Don't know if anyone still reads this thread but I have a query...
Last night we reported a leak in our roof which then lets water drip through the light fitting in the wc.
A bloke came out and stuffed a rag in the hole in the roof and a sparky came to remove the light fitting so we now don't have any working light.
I called mhs again today to find out when someone can come and fix the hole more permanently and i'm told 2 weeks. Two weeks with a hole in our roof and no light in the toilet? ok, its no emergency but surely it shouldn't be left for two weeks?!!

    Re: Ask MHS!

Unfortunately, I think that's pretty normal (to them anyway). The same sort of thing happened to me but without the hole in the roof. The bathroom light blew up and they left us without a light in the most used room in the house with no window in the middle of winter. Was fun bathing two toddlers by candlelight!

You can probably expect them to tip up in 2 weeks time, do a stealth drive up to the house, sneak out of the van, tiptoe up the path and stuff a 'you were not at home when we called' note through the letter box as you stare in disbelief from an upstairs window. After that it'll be another 2 week wait until they can 'schedule' you in because you couldn't be arsed, apparently, to answer the door when they were so eager to get in and fix your light.

The old saying 'MHS - Making Housing Shite' still rings true with me!

    Re: Ask MHS!

There are only a couple of reasons why you can reject SFA; one is if it's below your entitlement and I think there are others. if you do reject then you go to the bottom of the pile.

If you can show that the quarter is not habitable (photos through the window if unoccupied; speak to the current tenants etc) then you may be in better stead.

Have a look at JSP 464 for further guidance. ALso talk to the HIC - they are human and understand. Do not be fobbed off with one of the operator;s decisions, ask to speak to a manager and rebemeber to take notes during/ record (as long as you tell them) the conversatio; pop everything in writing to them as a record of discussion IOT insure they remember.

Bottom line, if you think something is not right then tell them and do not be afraid to complain - we pay rent and DE have to ensure that the quarters are fit for purpose.

so MHS have messed my heating up, and now saying they can't come fix it til Monday afternoon - where do I stand? I've put in a complaint. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old at home both with colds so being in a cold house obviously isn't going to help. I'm not happy.

They're buggers. If you have a gas fire or something in the living room then that's classed as a secondary source of heat so they're not duty bound to come out the same day and fix it. At least that's the excuse they gave me when I was without heating for 2 weeks plus.

yeah we've got an electric heater in the living room which I'm curled up infront of at the moment. Luckily the eldest is at nursery til 1 so she'll be warm there and the youngest is in bed with half a dozen blankets on her! I hate being cold and having the heating on 24/7. Whats annoyed me is that the guy came yesterday and broke the heating my changing the thermostat

Not acceptable - if you're in the house alone with children (or even not) you are supposed to get emergency assistance.

Ask for a Service Manager - it's out of order. I know plenty who get fobbed off with this and the "you have a storage heater" but that's not good enough.

Tell them to get it sorted - it's supposed to be a less than 12 hours' job.

    Re: Ask MHS!

I've just spoken to a manager and now they're saying Tuesday because I didn't accept the original offer of Monday morning, and that someone will be around later today to drop off electric heaters. So what am I supposed to do when my very inquisitive 1 year old touches 1 of these heaters and burns herself?! And because we've already had 2 emergency technicians out they're saying they can't send another because it couldn't be fixed. I'm sooooo angry right now

That's going to cost you a fortune in electricity. If I were you I'd take a note of my reader meeting and then present them with a little bill at the end!
