    I found this interesting:

Remotest B&B in Britain takes a stand over TripAdvisor 'lies’ - Telegraph

I'm completely addicted to TripAdvisor, use it all the time and find it really useful - but I did notice that a restaurant which I reviewed as not great, immediately had another 'review' which was quite obviously written by the owner. I wondered at the time how often that sort of thing happens and how malicious, or indeed biased (ie the business owner or his mates!) posts are filtered. There seem to be a lot of reviews by people who only ever post once...if you get my meaning!

TA is a fantastic idea, but it is open to so much abuse. The only things I really trust are the photos, as so many reviews are written by either the owners or someone close to them to counteract the poor ones.

Mind you, having stayed in some truly awful B&Bs in Britain, if it means they are being named and shamed then that can only be a good thing. Charging more for one night than it cost them to furnish the room may have got them through the last decade but it just does not cut it anymore. I used to be an instructor for DoE (many, many years ago) and one weekend we had a instructor weekend in the Peak District, checking routes etc., (total piss up) and four of us chose to sleep in the minibus rather than stay in the cesspit of a B&B that had been booked for us, it was just ing. Mind you, what could you expect for 5 per night I suppose.

Another time in Snowdonia, it spoke volumes that we all chose to spend 3 per tent to sleep in a farmers field for a weekend with sheep (1 extra to use the shower in the animal shed) rather than the local B&B.

Ex Army friends of ours own and run a hotel near Leeds for every bad review they get they follow up with 4 fantastic reviews!

I don't use Trip Advisor for that very reason, its too easy to abuse!

I'd love to see a spoof one for messes/wardrooms. My experience goes back a few ages now, but I could have great fun....

I did a spoof one for the holiday we took last year. It went down really well with loads of 'likes' and I ended up getting thank you emails from the holiday company. Unfortunately they didn't like it enough to let us go buckshee this year.
