Thread: A Wiki - just for you!

Ladies,

I help run the ARRSEPedia - a military Wiki which some of you will be aware of here. Think Wikipedia - but for us!

We are keen to incorporate a special page or Portal just for the wives, girlfriends and significant others of serving servicemen and women regardless of which bit of the Armed Forces they serve with.

However - and this is the hard bit - we need your input as to what you'd like to see there. A good example is the TA Portal which you can see here. Clearly your own Portal would contain links to whatever you think would be helpful. We are more than happy to create special pages just for you, so don't let anything constrain you. Clearly they will all be protected for you.

The ARRSEPedia draws attention in from all over the internet and represents our best way of spreading the good word about all sorts of things. It currently has 3 separate 'Stumbled' pages (which will increase) so it will continue to be a powerful piece of site functionality.

If you'd like to be a part of that growth in site potential - or just want to help future seekers of knowledge; or perhaps you remember what it was like to not have a clue about something you now know to be very simple, then jot down your suggestion on this thread, or PM me at ARRSE here or PM my OH 'Darthette_Doctrinus' on here.

I'd take a look at the stickies on other forums - people are always wanting info on housing regs, blueys, mess protocol etc.

OK folks - after much scrubbing of brains and literally hundreds of test runs, I give you.....the Rear Party Portal.

Plese note that this is still a 'work in progress' and clearly the actual content is up to you. I have locked the page so that no-one can tamper maliciously with it.

Let me know what you'd like to see - we can make it as big as you like and keep adding content that is relevant.

Since a fair number of the lads and lassies end up at BATUS in my lovely country, perhaps some info and associated links on Canada --> Alberta --> Suffield would be useful.

How about a link to RP users names like on Arrse. Here is MINE

We could start off having the MODs and a few of the more "in"famous RPers plus the ones already started on the arrsepedia. Then build up more and more names as we grow.

The new-look version is now up-and-running here.

Doris - not a drama, but remember that the portal is for users of RP, not another sewing circle in a new guise. You've got god-knows how many threads for that. I can add a 'RP Mods Contact' box if you'd like, which will link to your IDs on RP, unless you all specifically want to link to your Wiki pages?

I think it's a great idea.

This site is very specific in its target audience and it tends to attract people looking for information rather than banter initially.

As the site grows it can be a complete nightmare for newbies to find answers to their questions somewhere in all the threads, and that's assuming they even know what they should be looking for.

The wiki will give them straightforward (and ultimately correct) answers to their questions, without them having to take flak for asking a bone question on the main boards.

Considering all there is for a new army wife to know ref familes accom, pay, benefits, HIVE etc, I am bloody surprised none of the MOD's on here bothered to set it up ages ago or have made an effort to even contribute to what's in the one that has been set up for them.

Must have had too much knitting on or something.

How about.....a social column including stuff like a good eating out guide or good shopping guide by location? I dont know if you think that should be included in the garrison threads themselves or if its something that could be set up differently?

A link to a Multimap image of where the bases are. Not everyone is resourceful with the t'internet or has any knowledge of geography and might help with networking.

That's just off the top of my head and i didn't click on every link you have there so apologies if any of this is on there already, I will have a think.

One more small suggestion, the mods moved the forum Itch and Bitch off the main menu as to not scare too many lurkers or newbies away. Perhaps you might want to remove the I&B link from the R&P links.


Do we have a thread or two regarding discounted merchandise by merchants to HMF personnel? If so, can a link be made to it?

I think a link to contact MODs is a good idea.

You could have it similar to the "Contact a SysOp" bit.

( The only thing about the Sys Op bit is possibly putting something like
"Technical problems?? Contact a SysOp" - As I used to be a SysOp, I know what you are talking about, but to the uninitiated they may not know what you mean )

Right I have changed the 'Sysop' bit to point at all the RP Mods.

We are still working on the mapping issue - spent 4 hours on it tonight and no joy, but we'll keep plugging away.

Just a small comment. Wouldn't the garrison links be better for new members if they were more akin to this instead of a link to previous threads:

I appreciate that current/previous garrison residents commenting on a thread can be a help, but to be honest if I was looking for info I'd much prefer to see something similar to the above link.

It answers much more of a newbies questions than a thread going "oh we lived there and it was pants, the town hasn't even got a Woolworths and everyone was pad shagging.......<insert more unhelpful gossip here>"
