    Questions about Elmpt

    Hi Ladies,

Sorry I haven't posted in FOREVER, but the new bubs is rather time consuming! 8O

We finally got our posting order through last Wednesday, and it looks like we are Germany bound in about 2 weeks (thanks for the notice you w*nkers!! lol), but I have a few questions...

Looks like we will be getting a 2/3 bed quarter in Elmpt. We have a super king size bed. Am I looking at issues getting it in the main bedroom, or should I sell it quickly and get a new Double when we get there?

Sky - can we get it? How, and how quickly?

Transit insurance - should we go with the removals company, or is there someone better / cheaper that someone could recommend?

Pets - what do we need to get them across the channel (Eurotunnel) to Germany customs-wise? Have had conflicting reports on this. not worried about getting them back to the UK at this point, I just need to get them there.

Um...anything else I might need to know from those who have gone before and therefore now more than the bog standard responses that we may get from the other half's sources??

    Thanks in advance ladies!!

    x DM

    Re: Questions about Elmpt

    hi daisymac,

    how is the little sprog?

awwh Elmpt....the early morning flights to Neidderhein, the long weekends in block accommodation with no room to shake your arse let alone a cat!

my OH was in Elmpt last year while we were dating, its a really nice wooded area, not far down the road into netherlands is a mcarthur glenn retail park with some nice designer shops.

you're 10 mins down the road from JHQ with the big NAFFI store (my favourite to stock up on bargain perfumes lol) and the american px shop. i was like a child let loose in a sweet store, always came home with more in my weekend bag than what I went out with!

i couldn't tell you exactly what you'd get accommodation wise but from the houses I saw when we visited friends there, some had huge houses with basements. some were like our style of ex-council houses. there are different styles of houses there but they all looked fairly decent from the outside.

there was a chinese buffet restaurant we went to a few times, I couldn't tell you the name but I'm sure when you meet others there they will tell you where you can for nights out.

sorry i can't answer Q's on insurance and pets, I've not had a move with the OH yet. I'm sure someone else on RP can give you some insight on this.
The OH and I are due out to visit friends in Elmpt over the xmas hols.
Hope you and the family settle in nicely and enjoy the posting.
    xx

Some people are like slinkies, they're really good for nothing...but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs!

    Re: Questions about Elmpt

My ex was there, Ive only seen the inside of one quarter a 2 bed one and the master bedroom I think would be slightly cluttered with a super kingsize bed, but can you not get measurements from the housing people?

As far as pets go, I think the restrictions are pretty much they need to have innoculations and vaccines up to date and a petpassport thingy, I dont know if you would need anything else but I suppose a vet would be able to help more than anyone else?
Heaven wont have me, hell is scared I'll take over. Time for the pub!

On the move this weekend. Not sure yet where I'm going or when I'll get there.....hope theres enough vodka in the car.

    Re: Questions about Elmpt

Hi Daisymac - right I shall attempt to answer your concerns!

We had plenty of room for our kingsize bed in our quarter, so I would think if you are located on the main camp quarters then your bed will be OK! (these quarters were being puma'd in late 2003 as we left so they should be reasonable)

There is paperwork usually in your quarter with regard to the Sky (type) package, you can get all the channels but you do get a little choice! Can't remember how long it takes sorry, a week or so maybe?

I would go for the full pack, makes life a lot easier. I seem to remember the insurance they offer is OK but check on your home contents cover to see if you are covered for moving as well. When you get there make all your beds up first so at least if nothing else gets done you have somewhere to sleep. Also if you are driving over take a box with a kettle and tea/coffee supplies and biscuits, the removals men will be more accomodating when they tip up if you can offer them a brew!

Pet wise you used to need a export certificate and if you have dogs you may need to register them with the local authority (depends on breed). Its too late to organise a pet passport now anyway with 2 weeks to go, so if you want to take them back to the UK you will have to arrange that from over there now. The tick and tapeworm jab is just for coming to UK (or it used to be) as someone else has said talk to a vet is probably your best bet and try to phone MAFF or is is DEFRA now, I can never remember, they can inform you on the export papers.

And remember once you get settled to keep an eye on your oil supply because it needs to be ordered in advance!
    Enjoy!

    Re: Questions about Elmpt

Pets-Here are some guidelines for taking pets into Germany. http://www.howtogermany.com/pages/pets.html

King size bed-No idea about that one, everyone tells me room sizes are bigger in Germany, but I have never been.

Transit insurance-We normally only have to call our insurance company and tell them we are on the move and they do the rest. But we are with one of the companies that specialise in Armed Forces insurance (Abacus). But you do need a packing itinery from the removals just in case.

Sky Tv-Not too sure This might help http://www.rearparty.co.uk/cpgn2/For...ic/t=1909.html I think it involves taking your dish, box and card and tranferring your billing address to your In laws.

Have fun, good luck. Hope the bubba is doing well.

    Rinky xx

Re: Rhine Reigon - Info on housing, etc on JHQ, Elmpt

Other half went to JHQ today, he's spending the next 3 months in the singles block before he can take over a quarter a couple of weeks before we get married in the summer.

Feeling a tad like i've lost my right arm so wondered if you lovely ladies could cheer me up by posting some useful info on what I'm letting myself in for.

Only ever seen inside UK singles block so haven't got a clue what the patch will look like, what type of house we can get etc. I'm a tad worried about my career once we get settled, he'll be on operation quite a lot over the next couple of years so I'm not really happy about bringing a child in to the world until he's def. on hand for the nappy duties! Want to carry on with my work in the media on a self-employment basis so have questions about that and also want to learn German to maybe gain a bit of work on the continental side - any ideas about classes etc?

There seems like there's lots of classes and things to do to keep busy which is great, I'm looking forward to the community aspect. Just thinking there's a lot of time between now and July where i'll be on my own. Even though I work and have a fitness bootcamp to look forward to (got to get in shape for the wedding!) this Easter weekend seems to be dragging without another body to curl up to and eat chocolate with....

Perk me up someone please! And I know I'm pushing my luck but pictures would be great :-)
Not quite a newby but not quite there yet either, just settling in to my first patch in Germany.

If you are a Facebook user they have a dedicated group for married quarters.

You're an absolute STAR! This group is fab. Right, I'm off to grab a family pack of doritos and a bottle of wine before I settle down for a good nosey. Might even buy myself the New Moon DVD now I'm such a good mood.

    Thanks Boots x

Hey! First, congrats on wedding, such an exciting time!
Second, I work in JHQ housing office. Not sure if we already spoke on the phone but let me know what you'd like to know and I will do my best to help. I'm back at work next week so if you pm me your email adress I can send you photos and floor plans etc.
I was so apprehensive about moving here 18 mths ago, now I don't want to leave, really want to stay in Germany, it's great!
