    Travel Allowance

Hi all, just after a wee bit of advice ( which I probably already know the answer to). My husband had recently been deployed with no end date in sight at the mo.
My husband is in a place (without giving away details) where he can't just "nip" home at weekend shall we say. My family live a 10 hour car drive away and was just wondering if there was any financial help with travel, I go up when I can anyway but won't say no to any help with the cost.
My father used to be in the navy and was saying he used to be able to get travel allowance transferred to my Mum and was wondering if this is still available; my guess is no but just thought I would see if anyone knew anything.

My hubby gets GYH Get you home pay which is an allowance to help with travel. Is the request for you or your partner serving? it will only be him that is entitled to it. Do you live together? we had to provide a council tax bill with his and my name on it to get it x

Edit: Do you mean help with travel to see your folks? hmmm, not sure. I vaguely remember hubby saying he could get help for his parents to travel down and see him. BUT it may not be around anymore with the cutbacks etc. I think there was something like your dad mentioned, best to get OH to look into it, unless someone on here knows more :-)

We live in a married quarters at the moment. I heard about the GYH pay but he on deployment and doesn't come home if you know what I mean.
Yeah was meaning more for me to go a visit my parents etc, I know it sounds a bit cheeky but just when my Dad mentioned it I thought no harm is asking. My OH can't really look into it at the mo as he was deployed very last minute and is away. Thanks anyway.

You're only entitled to it if you're currently living overseas and its 2 journey's for a 6 month tour at the moment - either for you to travel somewhere or for close relatives (ie your parents, his parents or siblings) to travel to you.

Thought that might be the case, though it would be cheaper living over seas to fly to Scotland than it is to drive up from Cornwall! Thanks anyway.

You say he's deployed, does that mean he's on tour? If that's the case then you are entitled to 2 trips home to see the family (or for them to come to you) whether you're in the UK or not. If he's not operational and it's just a bog standard posting, then Mrs M's answer applies!

I stand corrected Bodger - didn't realise it applied the the UK too when they're deployed. I shall store that in my memory bank for next time!

Really, yeah think it's classed as a deployment. Naval terminology! I should probably pop over to the HIVE and find out more...just being lazy!

My hubby is on tour at the moment and he told me that he can transfer his rail warrants to me, all I have to do is just get in touch with the base and let them know.

    Bodger is correct

When my hubby is at sea - UK waters or abroad - I can use his get you home allowance to visit my next of kin, ie my parents or his parents. We did it earlier this year when he was on sea trials in UK waters.

There is a limit to how many times you can use it, I can't recall whether it's six times a year or not. But make very sure you get a reciept at your destination to prove you were there. And use the AA Route website as the guide for any car mileage claim.

Yes, I forgot to add, I can only use it to get home. I am not allowed to use it to have a girly weekend somewhere in the country.

WR, I could be corrected, but I am sure hubby did say 6 a year.

Thanks for all the info, the problem I have is not sure how long he is going to be away for, was all very last minute. Will see how long it ends up being for but that's great to know for future tours where i know how long it's going to be.

From what I have gathered, so long as he is deployed on a tour you should be entitled to a rail (although one of hubby's mates is from Guernsey and he gets a flight warrant) warrant. As others have said if he has just gone on an exercise and will be back in a couple of weeks then you will not be entitled to one of them.

The HIVE should be able to help out, or at least point youin the right direction. My husband asked on base before he left what I had to do, and I was told to contact his Warrant Officer and then let him know I was going home, get a receipt and then I will have to get it taken into him and then I would be refunded. When hubby was in Lympstone, he would get his train tickets printed for him, but since being at this draft he has had to claim it all back through JPA. Is there a contact you have on base when hubby is away? Maybe worth giving them a call and seeing what they say. If not I am sure, as I said, see if the HIVE can point you in the right direction. Of course, how I just described is how it is done here, it may be done different elsewhere for Navy/Amry/RAF.

Not really got a contact, just with him only finding out a few days before never really thought about that sort of thing. I'll defo look into it, can be £200+ to drive to Scotland and flying or train is even more expensive. I'll mention it to my hubby next time he calls.x

Hm, I would have thought that you would have a contact for on the base. Oh well, good luck and hopefully you can make it back home without it damaging the bank balance too badly.

How long have you been living in MQ's? When I first moved in I got a pack full of loads of contact numbers for all sorts of things for this area. Would you have not received one of them? It comes from the HIVE. If not, the HIVE will have numbers for you. Just pop in and see them

Oh yeah I got all that, I was working when we moved so my Hubby dealt with all that (thankfully). Will have a look through that pack. Think it was actually emailed too. Cheers
