    Council tax and CILOCT

Sorry if this one has been done before, but I can't see it anywhere.

Quick background. Me and the blerk about to buy a house that I will live in.

He is getting posted abroad at the end Aug for 3 years

Council is saying as the house is his main residence, we're not entitled to single person's discount off our bill (25%).

He pays CILOCT. Surely we should pay one or the other, not both???

I know soldiers get a rebate for 6 month tours, but what about postings?

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks!!

Nope, no discount if his name is on the mortgage. Rebates only on operational tours.

Get him to ask if he's entitled to 'get you home' allowance for coming home at weekends etc though.
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok. They know me here.

    That's typical, isn't it?

Me and the OH calculated that his duty takes him away from home for two thirds of the year, and he's only actually home for about ten weeks a year (once you take into account our decision to live further out of the home port). Yet we still have to pay full whack council tax. It's not on, really.

    I think it's absolutely scandalous.

If he were sent to jail, the house would still be his residence and he would still go there when he was released - but we'd get 25% discount.

Because he's serving abroad with HM Forces, we don't get discount.

This country has got it's priorities well and truly wrong - and we're going to be paying for services like refuse collection that he simply won't be using.

Things like this make me so cross. I couldn't give a stuff about the money we'd be saving. It's the principal.

If he's living in the single persons accomodation during the week he shouldn't be paying anything (as long as you're married) so I'd double check that

Nope, if you read the info on the link Boots posted it clearly says he won't get the discount. Being married doesn't make any difference. We're in the same situation and I don't particularly like it either but on the other hand there are benefits like get you home allowance that we wouldn't get from my employers.

My hubby didn't pay anything, but then we were both serving so thats maybe why. I was based in the UK and he was in Germany. He lived in the mess for free and didn't have to pay for his food either.

Get You Home Allowance is a bit of a farce, too. We live too close mileage-wise to qualify apparently, but if my OH took public transport (he doesn't drive) it would take him over two hours to get home!

If there's one upside, whilst he's on ops I can use the allowance to visit my mum and dad, which I intend to do at least once.

to get home to duty he has to actually be living at home and not have a room at his place of work, ie actually travelling there every day. I think its got to be a 2 hour journey to get the get you home thing but don't quote me on it. I'm just doing all of this from what I was able to claim when I was in.

Ooooh... now I'm a bit confused (it really doesn't take much!)

He's being posted to Germany, living in the mess.

I live in the UK in a house that we both own.

    We're not married.

So, is he entitled to 'Get you Home' allowance or 'Home to Duty' allowance?

Anywhere I can find out more info on what we're entitled to/whether we can claim/how to claim?

Thanks you lovely ladies (and gents!!)

Right, unfortunately if you're not married he's not entitled to very much at all. I think he should get 1 journey home a year (he really needs to check with his admin unit). He will still have to pay for food and accomodation at his unit in Germany. The armed forces are shit and don't recognise a relationship unless you're actually married.
He will have to look into it from his end really to be sure. Its all there on the internet but there's just alot of it to trawl though and can be quite confusing.

OK that's fine. Don't mind not being entitled to much because we're not married, but object to missing out on stuff that we are entitled to! I'll get him to ask, just to make sure.

Thanks very much for your reply!!!

Sorry to be a party popper but he will not get any get you home allowances whilst posted in Germany, and its usually down to the individual area if they will give you a discount. I served in Germany for 5 years and had my own home in the UK for the duration and had the pleasure of paying both council tax and CILOCT.
