Posted to Chilwell - need the lowdown!

Will be moving to Chilwell in January (from Bergen-Hohne camp in Germany) and would really appreciate being able to hit the ground running once there. Just have the usual questions regarding quarters, facilities etc.

Would be great to hear from anyone currently there (or recently left).

    Thanks,
    seb217

A friend was recently posted to Chilwell. She was put into a hiring because there were no quarters available on camp. Things may have changed over the past 3 or 4 months though. Can't give you too much info on the area and facilities other than there's a bloody great Tesco opposite the camp gates and Nottingham can be quite a good night out.

MQs are very short on camp indeed. Didn't live on camp so can't say what the social side of things is like as we were miles out, which worked out well as the house is lovely and the garden is mahusive (it's an MQ just based elsewhere)

Depending on what you like doing, you've got a lot of options up at Chilwell. Nottingham is best for shopping, nights out etc. and not that far a taxi ride into/back from the city either so it's not crucifyingly expensive to get out and about for a night out.

There's usually a big fireworks display that goes on , bonfire etc, in November (obviously) which was pretty good the last time we managed to make it.

There are tennis courts on camp, and as Bodger said, a huge 24-hr Tesco's right in front of the main gate, really, and bus links from there into the city as well.

    Should be ok!

    Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I had heard that quarters on camp are few and far between, so will just have to continue to keep my fingers crossed that we get one - not going till January, so hopefully someone will be moving out before then :-)

After living in Germany for two years, I am looking forward to shopping in Tesco. Life here is fantastic, but haven't found a supermarket here that compares.

Having a big city like Nottingham close by will no doubt come in handy and will be nice to be near Derbyshire - although the Black Forest here in Germany takes some beating! Really don't want to leave - can you tell?!

When we get an address, perhaps you may be able to give me further information i.e. if we get a hiring, what the are is like etc.

    Till then,

Lived at chilwell for a while on camp. Houses quite old but some have had new kitchens. Can be quite a noisy busy camp as the comings and goings of TA training for deployment. Handy hint....parking in city centre can get expensive...if you go out of the back gate of camp and head to depot corner ..just at the end of the road...you can get the rainbow 7 bus in to the city centre ...main bus depot is under the big shopping centre :-)
Defo head to the Ice Arena for shows, concerts etc..
Beeston is right next door to camp and is good for a few shops...if you book a holiday then head to Ilkeston Co Op Travel (now part of Midland Co Op) on Beeston high street..manager there Helen is very up on Military discounts and getting the best deal for soldiers! :-)

    Apologies for delayed reply.

We have now moved into our quarter ... on camp! Thankfully we didn't get a hiring as this would have involved having to run two cars and I like the security that living on camp provides - although I have yet to find an insurance company that appreciates the fact that we have an armed guard on the front gate!

Scoot - thank you for all your useful advice, it really is much appreciated - do you still live here?
