    Mothers Day -

My local supermarket, florist, card shops and gift shops are bursting at the seams with over-priced crap and nick-nacks this week.

Am I the only one who genuinely adores Mothers Day when it is stuff the kids have made themselves? I have a shoe box in my wardrobe with all their Mothers Day cards and pressies they have made right from pre-school.

Or finishing Mothering Sunday with a home made sticky-tea of sandwiches and cakes that the children have all made together after a day of spontaneous tea making?

Am I the only that thinks that Mothers Day is a bit too commercial nowadays? Or am I just being miserable and cheap?

I don't think you are being "Miserable and cheap" at all. I used to love Mother's Day when I was a kid as I'd get to go and pick flowers (usually daffodils and snowdrops and the like) and make my own little bouquet, and then make cards and things.

I loved my mum's reaction and was overly touched when I found some of my kiddie presents and cards to her when clearing out my Dad's house when he passed away. (They had kept everything until the late 80s when some sh.thead burgled our house, stole everything from the attic and basically wrecked the place. My mum was gutted at the time)

I hate commercial days - Valentine's Day etc. - and the fact that prices go "up" the week before some commercially-viable day comes along.

Making things was half the fun - and Easter! I loved making Easter cards as a child. If I had kids, I'd definitely want the hand-made stuff, and not some last-minute-dash of over priced chocolates and a naff " mum songs" CD that always appears

    Oops. Rant head off.

Totally agree with the 'too commercial' bit, it's the same as Easter, Christmas etc...pile it high, sell it cheap/over-priced and nasty (delete where applicable). Speaking as someone who doesn't have a mum anymore there's nothing I'd like more than to be able to give my mum something I'd grown in my own garden with my own fair hands, not something wrapped in acres of cellophane that will wilt within a week and to have to opportunity to tell her how fab she is.

Edit to add: Please excuse me, I'm feeling a little emotional today!
I can't decide whether to be a good example or a horrible warning

Lmfao... to be honest I have all the cards my son has made and none that were bought. I think I must be very bah humbug about these things but I much prefer something my children have made the effort with than some expensive non-thought.

Well, as it's my first Mothers Day I'm waiting to see what Darcey has picked out, by way of proxy of course!

I absolutely, wholeheartedly agree with you HP, I cannot wait for the days when I get a breakfast in bed of cheerios and milkshake ( the remenants of which I'll have to clean up off the floor, where chubby little hands have spilled it) a card with bits of pasta glued haphazardly to it, and scrawled declarations of love traversing across the page.

NEVER eat anything they make at nursery, I teach those classes, I'll never eat anything they bring home from school again. Ever.

Yeah defo with everyone on the commercial side. I am happy to get what my daughter has made at school and spending the day with family. It almost becomes a chore when lots of money has to be spent. Then your counting the days and budgetin money on the next commercial moment.

I was booked with the cherubs into a yummy pub for lunch, but I've cancelled so that big son can watch F1. I really am the perfect Mummy!

Yep def agree it is getting over commercialised just like everything else.

My wee boy (2 yrs) made me a lovely hadmade card at nursery, he came out with it and was really excited to give it to me.

It is sooooo lovely and is def more precious to me than a shop bought one.

Yeah I agree. As with all celebrations (Christmas, Easter etc) it's all commercial and overpriced. It was my birthday yesterday and DH wanted to have flowers delivered to me. Free delivery all last week, all next week but for Mothers Day weekend it was £6. So my flowers arrived on Friday!

Well, we both had breakfast in bed this morning which consisted of marmalade on toast and a cracking cup of tea. (Best thing I ever did was to teach my kids to make tea).

I got two scented candles, maltesers, body lotion and a teddy bear and some gorgeous cards. Then this afternoon the girls gave me two Clarins makeovers (second best thing I ever did was to play "beauty salons" when my girls were tiny).

I have had a lovely day.

I'm hoping Samm isn't your real name otherwise there'll be some explaining to do in your household!
