    Maternity clothing secrets.

I am really struggling to find anything that fits properly and just wondering if this is normal. Over/under the bump trousers just fall down (hence the braces), tops are either tent like or so tight they cut off the blood supply and the quality is dreadful.

I can't afford Isabella Oliver/Seraphine (except on ebay and I've had to fight practically to the death for some clothes), Mamas and Papas stuff doesn't fit, JoJo Bebe Maman stuff doesn't fit and I hate looking like I do at the moment, in ill fitting, baggy, poorly made clothes that I spend most of time pulling up so that I don't look like some home boy gangster exposing his bottom to all and sundry particularly as I am starting to think that big knickers look comfy!

    I share your pain!

I bought the basics - i.e. jeans - from Next as their maternity range is pretty comprehensive and relatively cheap. I went for on the bump, but to be honest at 37 weeks I'm now past caring about pulling up my jeans every time I stand up. As for tops, for slummy days it's polo shirts (two sizes bigger or male sizes) and slightly bigger than normal t-shirts.

But the real win is the current fashion for tunics - White Stuff, Fat Face, East and, dare I say, George at Asda (!) - have been brilliant. Still been able to buy my normal size yet the tunic style is very forgiving with a large bump. I've not spent a fortune and bought things I can wear after the event.

I've been determined not to go mad on maternity wear and, touch wood, the tunics have got me through

I was like that when I was pregnant. I found a pair of jeans from mothercare that fitted really nicely, and wore them constantly for the last 4 months of my pregnancy - I would literally wear them, wash and dry them overnight, then wear them again. I also had maternity uniform from the RAF which wasn't too bad.
I bought lots of tops from the maternity range at Dorothy Perkins which were lovely and really nicely fitted.

I bought some basics from Next Maternity - leggings and a couple of work skirts, and wore with hubby's shirts and polo tops!!! I also used to shop at Blooming Marvellous but I think they went bust a couple of years ago unfortunately. I also used to wear hubby's trackie bottoms quite a bit especially when I was just lazing round the house.

As ever ladies, thank you. Glad to hear it's normal and not that I'm just a weird shape as I was starting to wonder.

I am loathe to spend money on clothing that will only be worn for a few months and so far it is only 2 pairs of trousers and 1 top specifically maternity labelled that I've bought but trousers are the biggest issue, I managed to put a hole into the Jojo Bebe jeans within 48 hours due to the constant pulling up which is a waste of £28!

Liking the idea of normal clothes just a couple of sizes bigger/styled to be loose and will also go check out the larger supermarkets (did you see what I did there ) for their maternity clothing sections.

    Thank you!

Just wondering whether you like sewing gentlesoul or know someone who does?

You can get some nice patterns for maternity - I've had a quick look and just been able to find a few here - there's a trousers pattern which you could rustle up and then adjust at the waist to be a better fit for you:

GS, I feel your pain, however I have found a solution. This time around I have bought some lovely, excellent quality tops from eBay (mama's and papas), yes you do have to be ruthless, and about four pairs of jeans, two of which I have re sold on (for a small profit) eBay.
As for casual, I have four or five plain maternity vests and tops from George at asda, then I just wear light cardigans over my arms or if it's cool or an open, short sleeved or sleeveless shirt. Doesn't look scruffy, and there is no unsightly bulging at the bust or bump.

My vests have been my saving grace.

take your favourite jeans....add a elasticated hair bobble to the hole where the button goes through (think its called a bulldog knot) and clip the other side of the bobble onto your button...wa la....homemade maternity jeans

I brought a pair of cropped jeans maternity trousers that had a huge elasticated bump thingy, it went over most of my bump and fitted well. The normal maternity jeans with the smaller band, were cr@p IMO. When the weather became warmer, I started wearing short leggings and summer dresses or I wore maxi dresses. As for tops, I just brought a top 1 size bigger in vests and they stretched. New look are good for the cheapish vests that stretch and don't look that baggy.

You could go the leggings route, maybe some uggs with them when the weather gets a bit chilly, with a fitted type dress jumper thingy

For my last pregnancy, I lived in leggings. Just normal size ones, not maternity. Some of them sat nicely under the bump, others went right over, depending where I bought them.
For tops, I used to buy the next size up and from the tall sections of shops, so that they were long enough to go right over the bump.
Also Dorothy Perkins or Next for their basic thsirt/tops. You can't go wrong with them.
