    Posted to Canada

OMG! We are off to Canada in 11 weeks. Lots to do with moving. Anyone have pearls of wisdom that I could do with? Thanks

Special Tree is not joking or exaggerating. Last year at this time I was in BATUS and we hit -43C. Bitterly, bitterly cold. You will need to drive. Ralston Village (where most of the SFA are) is about 45 min drive from Medicine Hat (the nearest town). Edmonton is 6 hours drive away but is worth it for the shopping.

Best bit of advice for you now is if you haven't sent your shipping already do it NOW. It took 3 months for mine to arrive and that was summer!

My mate has just been based out there this week, 2nd time round, his advice would be 'panadol and lots of it', when I asked why, he said that the booze is cheap..................can tell he's single huh lol

Best trick is to not sober up for 2 years. But then again I've been there and done it so am just a little bit over the amazing BATUS experience!

Does anyone know how small the houses are in Ralston? We are entitled to a 2 bedroom, thanks

Very. But don't worry too much because you've got a massive basement which is completely kitted out with carpets, separate rooms etc. Quite a few people sleep down there in the summer because the top of the house is absolutely roasting (and the air con is quite frankly crap).

I am from Calgary, it is cold - but you can buy nice warm clothes when you are over there. we also have much better heating then over in the uk so houses are nice and warm.
My husband did think it was funny you have to plug your car in overnight, to make sure it starts the next day. We took my in-laws to Canada this past year and they absolutely loved everything over there. the only thing they missed and my husband always brings is tea bags. We are coffee drinkers not tea drinkers! Calgary is only a 2 hour drive away. drumheller is nearby and it has a massive dinosaur museum (if you have little ones they love this) and the mountains are about a 3 hour drive, the mountains are breathtaking. Thinking about it is making me homesick!

Mountain Equipm'nt Co-Op shops are great - good quality & good value outdoor clothing and kit, knowledgeable staff and ethical / environmental policies. I often ask friends visiting Canada to buy items for me from MEC.

MEC has a discount card, so make sure you ask for it. A lot of places downtown Med Hat do BATUS discount as well. If you're ever travelling and need accommodation, always ask for the Government discount. Especially in the States. We managed a huuuuge massive suite at the Luxor and then MGM Grand in Vegas for $50 a night. Thank you very much!
