    Diego Garcia

had the oh home this weekend and we were talking about his drafting options and things and he mentiond he wouldnt mind putting in for a 6month draft in Diego Garcia, so im just wondering if anyone on here has anyone they know based out there and could give any advice on absolutly anything and everything to do with a draft out there, its all just talk at the minute as just because he might (and it is a might) put that in his preferences that doesn't mean he'll get it and it wont be until next year anyways i just thought id get a heads up from you guys, kind of 'doing my homework' you could say about it. Cheers,

Never been but look it up on a map - it's remote, its small, its according to wiki predominately American...I'd love to go there as it looks like it would be fantastic for scuba - but I suspect even I could get bored after 6 months.
Heaven wont have me, hell is scared I'll take over. Time for the pub!

On the move this weekend. Not sure yet where I'm going or when I'll get there.....hope theres enough vodka in the car.

I know someone who has done a tour of duty on Diego Garcia (with the Royal Navy Police) and he loved it. I shall ask him to tell me more about it.

Had a quick scoot about the net - couldn't see anything substantial on the UK side but saw this for the US military:

yeah i did abit of searching around for things on the net but couldnt really find anything that i was looking for, for example the oh and i where talking about what it would be like if he did a 6 month draft out there and he mentioned i could go visit him apparantly, i dunno if he was just saying that to try cheer me up and put a positive light on it or whether i actually could, i wouldnt have thought so, even if we where married i still wouldnt have thought id be able to go out there at all, anyways its all hyperthetical at the moment but thanx for your replies and soliel if you could ask your friend that would be a big help thanx

I have to be honest and say I don't have a clue where this is but there is usually a way that you can visit. My hubby's regt go to the Falklands a lot and they only get a weeks r and r and its 2 days travel there and back so a lot of the wives travel over to the ascension isles instead and meet theie hubbies there for r and r. So i can't see that there wouldn't be a way you could go and visit if its a safe enough area

I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable source but this article is fairly comprehensive and does suggest that service persons families are not allowed to the atoll.

yeah i read that article and it is rather vague it says "No service-member family dependents are allowed" to me that suggests children as they are dependents and we don't have any kids lol but it could mean anything like you said its not the most reliable site in the world lol. Like i said this is all just speculative at the moment as this was literally just an idea that sprung in his head lol "oh i mite..." etc lol but i thought id post and get some info from here even so as with the navy it is my experience that they never know what they are doing until the last minute (no offense to anyone) but thats my experience so far lol

It's not vague at all. In the mil world a 'dependent' is anyone married to a service person and their children if you're not married then you simply don't exist!

If the site is also home to 'classified' materials which again is suggested by the article they won't want fairly unvetted civilians running around.

I'd say its a 99% certainty that you will not be allowed to travel there.
