    New York

Evening all me and the Bloke are off to the above mentioned city in November as a welcome back off tour holiday and I'm after recommendations of hotels and restaurants if you good people have any!

Hotelwise we're trying to find something fairly central, clean, quiet and not too expensive by NYC standards. Doesn't have to be anything special. And no one I've spoken so far has come up with anything that fits the bill.

And just wondering if anyone's been to any decent restaurants. That they can remember the name of - unlike my mum, who spent 10 minutes on how fab this little place was. No clue where it is or what it's called of course.

Oh and while I'm at it - we have a second week and we're trying to decide what to do with it. So many choices that if anyone has a recommendation it might just help sway us one way or the other! We don't mind a few hours flight so any suggestions about fab places to carry on to would be gratefully received. My vote is Key West but I think the Bloke wants to avoid too much sun...Bless.

If you have a second week to spare, come home on the Queen Mary 2. Just used it to travel back from NY and it was fabby. If you wanted to dress up every other night then you could, if you didn't want to then that was cool too. If you want more info let me know, I could go on for hours!!

Loads of places to stay in New York. We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria, it's not as expensive as you would think and it's gorgeous, just remember to drop in the military connection. If you want luxury at a seriously good price then that's the place to stay. I'm afraid I'll be like your Mum, even though it's only been a fortnight since I was there, I've forgotten the name of everything. I remember a great all night Italian on 7th and a seriously good Mexican just off Times Square. Get the Rough Guide to NY and you're laughing, all the stuff in there is good.

Word of warning, I'd just come back from a very hot place and thought I'd be used to the NY climate, it came as a shock to me to discover that hot and dry was different to hot and sticky (although the weather might have turned by now!

    Have a great time!

Cheers Bodger! I'm thinking he's going to be going from hot and dry to...snow. Or certainly rain.

Did you mention the military thing on booking? I'm rather hoping that might get us a discount! He's been chatting with some Septics out there and they've all said to flash our MOD90s everywhere. Actually there's a point - did you see anything of these City Pass things or the discount coupon books? Just wondering if it's worth the money of buying them.

Sorry, totally ignored the November thing! You can definitely expect rain! And you won't be able to get back on the QM2 because it doesn't run transatlantic that time of the year.

Never bothered with a City Pass or anything else. Your MOD90 will sort you out. Loads of places give discounts. If you're booking accommodation ask for the Government Rate and if that sounds pish then try the Military Rate. They're usually the same but some places will knock off a bit more for Services.

Museum of Modern Art let in servicemen for free, British or otherwise. Empire State is free if he tips up in uniform (as if) otherwise there's a discount. Discount for the ferry over to Staten Island. Pretty much every tourist place has discounts and nobody ever asked for Mr B's MOD90 just took it at face value.

Like I said, the Rough Guide is the book to get. Well worth it with all the accommodation details and places with good scoff.

    Enjoy!

And as you come up Southampton Water you'll see some pretty little Balamory style houses on the right.....wave as you go past and I'll wave back!

Tact is for people who aren't witty enough to be sarcastic.
