Dublin - Advice Please

Post Posted: Wed Aug 20, 2008 2:45 pm

Hi Ladies

We are off to Dublin in a couple of weeks for a long weekend, its our mini-moon before the big holiday later in the year.

Now I have been before, hubby hasnt, I went on a hen weekend cue most of time spent propping the bar up.

Now quite alot of time will be spent propping the bar up on this weekend too but inbetween I want to do some touristy stuff, I want to go to the store house again, so think its best to do the city tour, what i want to know is where else do people recommend we visit, dont want to pay to get in somewhere like the castle to find out its shite and also can anyone recommend any nice restaurants other than the kebab shops? Would like a bit of sophistication now Im a married laydee.

We only have a long weekend so dont want it to be pot luck and would prefer some recommendations.

Hope you can help and thanks if you do!

Oh gosh I really wish I could answer this! I spent four days in Dublin a few years ago but I am ashamed to say that other than the storehouse I didn't see much else other than the interior of pubs.

I would go and flick through a few guide books in a bookshop, steal the best ideas and pop them back on the shelf.

Hi - I have been to Dublin, have vague memories of trying to take a train ride from somewhere to see something with someone and actually went nowhere to see nothing with no-one as I was too drunk to get on the train Laughing .

ah Guiness - I can drink a pint of the stuff in six seconds Wink I love it. We dont have enough Guiness related threads on this site, now do we Ladies?

Slightly off topic, but after Dublin I went to Kinsale which is a tiny seaside fishing village about 45 minutes from Cork with 100s of pubs, seriously 100s and several blinding eateries. Spent 36 hours there and then one night in Cork which was awesome.

Have always found the "Rough guides" pretty good. They take in to account that folks may only be there for a couple of days.

The best section .... the pub section of course Laughing Laughing

Dublin's fab. Unfortunately I only ever go to visit friends there so it's like being at home but in different restaurants and bars etc. There are a couple of fabulous museums I went to (years ago now) so worth checking out. Google the Irish tourist board - it might throw you a few ideas?

Hmmm...

finding an RP'er who has been to Dublin and remained sober enough for sophisticated activities may prove problematic : -)

James Joyce Centre was really good Location: 35 Parnell Square North. Opening Hours: Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm; Sunday, 12:30-5pm.

More ideas are on this site Clicky linky inky pinky which might give you a few ideas.

I returned from Dublin a couple of weeks ago Boogie.

Try Kilmaineham prison for a bit of history, about a 30 min walk from the Storehouse, or you can get a bus.

Dublin Zoo was good too as was Trinity College where you can amble round the grounds or take a guided tour inside then have a brew and a bite in the restaurant.

For shopping, get yourself down O'Connell Street.

Plenty of bars and eateries near the college, just off O'Connell St, Temple Bar etc.

Enjoy.

Hi, I might be able to help. I help sub-edit and fact check a colourful brand of tour guides, we did Dublin back in February. I'll have to rack my brains and emails to remember some of the places. When I have a bit more time later this afternoon I'll do that for you, hopefully i still have some record of Dublin Confused . I'm super organised you see.

I assure you the weekend wont be dull, I cant think of any weekends we have spent together since we met that have been dull lol Very Happy

Thanks for the advice ladies, Bossy forgot all about the Zoo (love watching the monkies lol) and if the prison isnt far from the store house I think that will be worth a look too, cheers!

Snowflake - if you have any restaurant recommendations that would be mint, not too concerned about bars, our hotel is over looking the River Liffy which is most convenient for staggering from Temple Bar!!

Thanksall!
