I have a young dog and he is currently used to a climate which is quite cold. He struggles on a UK hot day. What would be the advice from other pet owners already in Cyprus? How well do your dogs cope and was the journey to Cyprus by Air Cargo okay?

surely my bold answers your question?

I knew someone would write that. I was looking for a bit more than that, hopefully an answer from someone who has a dog out there already.

My dog is a Hunting dog, he looks like a Giant Spaniel and isn't 'very' hairy and I know the majority of dogs don't like the heat (my dog is no exception).
I have heard people say that if you walk them mornings, evenings and have air conditioning in the house it's okay. I have the means to keep him in the UK if I have to, I just don't want to cause him uneccessary suffering by putting him through the stressful journey only to send him back again because it's too hot.

Has anyone else had this experience of flying a dog to Cyprus? How long did it take the dog to adapt to the new climate?

Not entirely to the same scale but my family have always had dogs and taken them on holiday with us where possible, different dogs seem to adapt to different temperatures at different rates, we had an Irish Setter (very long haired( who was never happier than when the rest of us were too hot to even consider moving, whereas our current dog hates hot weather, he likes it warm but if its hot he just lies around looking hopeless (he's a dal so short haired).

Thanks for the reply, you are right to say that each dog is different, he might be okay. I am not sure at all what to do. Such a hard decision!

I've been in a very hot and very cold climate and all the dogs managed just fine. I know one golden retriever who is uber hairy and I thought he'd suffer a bit, but no, he was absolutely fine. Just be sensible with walking and leaving them outside. The usual stuff.

As far as the flight is concerned, it's not a long one. Just make sure you use a reputable pet carriage company (if that's what you choose to do). If the dog travels with you, make sure you ask the flight staff to check that the heating is on in the hold. The pilot should have done it already, but I've known dogs freeze to death because they have occasionally forgotten.

Thanks for the information, it helps knowing other peoples experiences from travelling with pets. This will be the first time I have to travel with my dog by air and it's quite a scary thought especially when he won't be with me for reassurance.

Freeze to death in the hold? That's a scary thought! I'll be on the same flight then! I did wonder about the conditions of the hold and airport for him! Would you have any recommendations of good companies?

If you want to travel with your dog you need to see which airline the Army's going to send you with and then check with them whether they'll take the dog on the same flight as you as baggage. You won't have a choice of airline if it's booked for you unfortunately. I can't really give you any recommendations other than BA as all the others are North American companies who won't fly to Cyprus.

Don't stress about this! Your dog will be fine, on the flight and probably when he gets to Cyprus. If in doubt though, leave him at home with the family.

Thanks Bodger, that's a great help.

I don't think we know who we are flying with yet so I'll probably need to wait it out before I can really make a decision. Smile
