2 pet dogs to Cyprus

Post Posted: Sat Jan 06, 2007 12:12 am

Hi - newby to the pages so please be gentle!

Got notice of posting to Cyprus yesterday. However need lots and lots of details about how to bring my 2 small dogs with me. Got all the general official stuff about how (PETS scheme etc and conditions) but just wanted some other thoughts by folks who have done this or have their pets there now etc etc. Any hints or recs. Thank you Bridie

This is a message a friend asked me to pass on, it is literally cut and copied off another chatroom: 'THE WOMAN WORRYING ABOUT 2 DOGS GOING TO CYPRUS COULD U TYPE A MESSAGE TO HER SAYING THEY NEED CHIPS, AND VACCINATIONS AND PET PASSPORTS ALL FROM VETS AND THAT SHE CAN SHIP THEM FROM UK USING 'ANIMALAIRLINES'' hope this helps, she is moving to Cyprus herself and I told her to have a look on here but she cant register just yet.

Morgan, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. Thank you (both) I have found the Animal Airlines website. I may give them a call and pick their brains! When you friend gets online maybe she can reply too with her experiences.

Any other info still greatly appreciated, by any one else.

Happy New Year, have a safe 2007 wherever you are

Hi there,
we are in Cyprus at the mo and our neighbours have just moved back to scotland and took their German Shepherd on a Cyprus airways flight as their baggage allowance, it was alot cheaper, think the total for 3 adults and the dog was about £800 ... Your dogs will need their pet passports most of the info you need is on the defra website
hope that helps

Very Happy Thank you for replying from Cyprus! I am very excited about moving this time. Looking forward to joining all you guys at some point in the next 2-3 months!

Your reply was fabulous! At least I know now that people do actually take their dogs and that they are fine when they are there. Someone else has also said to me that my duo could go as 'baggage'! That would probably work out, as I would want to be on the same flight anyway. I'll keep digging about for info.

Stay safe Cool etc

Unfortunately to gain a pet passport you could be looking up to 6 months, I am not sure how they do it in the UK though. My cat had to have his jabs plus blood tests for rabs. The total cost wast 100 Cyp pound but the passport is for life. You could be looking at paying 600- 1000 to bring a dog out according to my friend who brought her's across from the UK. Just make sure all papers are done, insurance and such, Cypriots have a big thin about running dogs over.

Also try to find out the effects the heat will have on your dogs, my friend's dog gained some lovely skin issues when they first came over.

Good luck though xx

That's why I left my rabbit in Belgium and she's now in a good home! I didn't want to face all the trouble and costs for one rabbit - ferries don't like having rabbits on board, to get the rabbit on a flight would cost us a lot of money and rabbits don't live that long. So she's happy in Belgium. Boys wants more but moved into our house of our own and discovered that there's LOTS of furry cats around us and often sits on top of our empty rabbit hutch!! They are really sneaky ones because they think there's one in the hutch and often creep up to the door!!! Pepperdust don't work!!

Nope, he is although, happy in the cat society that adopted him. I feel this is best for him, although they had problems with him hiding in a concrete tunnel until he felt more secure lol

They email me once a week and occasionally call me to tell me how he is!

How did they do that? What is the procedure there? We are moving from Germany to Cyprus next year and I have a large dog to take with me who suffers from separation anxiety, so I'd rather take him myself if I could.

Again, what are dog owners thoughts on how thier dogs cope in Cyprus heat? I am quite worried about all this.

Help!

You can take pets as 'baggage' if the airline you use allows it. You'll need to check with your specific airline. It's much, much cheaper than sending them separately. I was quoted more than £1,000 to fly my dog from UK to North America with a pet carriage firm. If you speak to the HIVE they might already have that info for you.

just a warning, if you are posted to Dhekelia, dont exercise your dog in the bondu as at a certain time of year (cant remember if spring or autumn) there are massive bundle's of nasty caterpillars.
There is also the usual insects of ticks etc oh and the snakes and mediteranean spiders. (very similar looking to the tarantula. massive)

Hi there

We have numerous factsheets on moving to Cyprus including one about pets. Visit www.aff.org.uk/aff_cyprus.htm and look on the right hand side under Downloads/Factsheets

Best wishes
